View Full Version : Installing Muncie Shifter...Help!
fugetaboti Jun 21st, 08, 12:49 AM I just drove up to Classic Industries today, and picked up a Muncie shifter at 20% off which was good. I have spent sometime getting this thing in my car, but now that everything is hooked up, it doesn't seem to shift properly. My car is not driveable and is still a project, but I would like to know the trick to properly installing and adjusting this shifter. I have read throught the AIM, and it's confusing to me. Also, the AIM shows a gage of some sort, but no dimension or how to use is. Can someone please help me to get this right? I've used the search function, and the only thing I've found were people talking badly about these shifters, and how they are tricky to install. If anyone has good photos of one installed, please send them to me if you have the chance.
Thanks,
Rick
JOE58 Jun 21st, 08, 05:11 AM The short version is to lock the shifter in neutral position useing a 1/4 '' rod then adjust the rods to fit the trans arms in the neutral postion
fugetaboti Jun 21st, 08, 12:21 PM How do I use the 1/4" rod to lock the shifter in neutral?

the shifter body has an alignment hole to put the pin into (shifter in neutral), then adjust the rods to fit

That's true for a Hurst, but I didn't think the Muncie shifter had that hole. I could be wrong though.
RaiderNation67 Jun 21st, 08, 11:12 PM I just installed one of thosein my 67 camaro but I had to mount it to my crossmember and had to use a bolt to aline the nutral witha bolt and have the linkages centerd then u put the arms in the hurst have it easier but cost a little more
fugetaboti Jun 22nd, 08, 01:45 AM I'll have to take a look underneath tommorow, and see if I can make sense of it all. Hopefully I'll get it all figured out soon.
JOE58 Jun 22nd, 08, 07:01 AM with the Muncie shifter you can use the 1/4 in rod.
You have to push the shifter levers to the rear to hold them against the 1/4 in rod
here is a pic with a pensil in the hole for the rod
pdq67 Jun 22nd, 08, 09:15 AM It's either a 1/4" or 5/16", I forget!
I used a drill bit.
Adjust it like this!!
"Set the CLEAN and well lubed shifter up adjusted so that it lead's both 2nd into the "H" and the "H" into 3rd by like a thread or maybe a thread and a half!!
This is a "FEELIE" deal here!!
Like my "Snoopy art"..

Not like this

You will feel the difference!!"

fugetaboti Jun 23rd, 08, 01:33 AM Joe58,
Thanks for the picture, I think that will help quite a bit!
PDQ,
I'm not sure what that means, maybe you could explain it better in order to help me adjust it properly.
tejasrs/ss Jun 23rd, 08, 09:52 AM hey what does that "stabilizer bar" mount to and where can I find one?? I bought a repro shifter but it didn't come with that.
JOE58 Jun 23rd, 08, 11:04 AM that "stabilizer bar" mounts to the top left trans case bolt.
It is available as a repop or if you want an original try ebay
tejasrs/ss Jun 23rd, 08, 12:30 PM any idea what the actual name of it is so I can search for one and what repro houses should I look at? Thanks
fugetaboti Jun 27th, 08, 12:33 PM I believe it is a stabilizer bar or torsion bar. PDQ, Can you please tell me how to do the whole 1st leading 2nd thing?
