Ummm... as I said this is probably one of the most stupid questions you guys have ever had but I gotta know. I have a 10 bolt rear end and the cover plate has an inverted V channel on it as normal. Well, the lower ends of the V meet up with two holes that lead into the shafts that hold the axles. The question is this... does the V catch oil that is flung by the ring gear and channels it down into those holes and thereby sending diff oil to the rear wheel bearings for lube, or are those holes strictly vent holes and no oil goes into those shafts and so I should grease my bearings?
I ask because when I pulled the axles off and took a look at the wheel bearings, they were moist with diff oil and had no grease on them what so ever, plus there was a little oil in the shafts... but I always thought all wheel bearing used grease alone. What gives?

You are correct.... diff lube oils the axle bearings, no grease needed.

Thanks Doug,
That's exactly the answer I was hoping for. Now I don't have to redo everything I already finished.
Thanks again

There is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people to afraid to ask.....
Take the classroom...the nerd askes a simple question to get soimething clear in their head...the jocks give him a hard time, but they havnt a clue what the question is about anyway....So who has the REAL balls...the nerd who most proberly knows hes going to get flack, to the dumb jocks?
Sry I just get anoid when ppl start a question with "this is a stupid question"

there are no stupid questions ... only stupid answers!
I always grease new bearings on installation to provide break in lube until the gear lube gets out there.

Do we even HAVE any jocks (OK, bullys) here?

I usually dip them and install, didn't really even think that was needed.

Same here. Dip them before I install them, then after I refill the differential I rotate the wheels a few rotations and they are good to go.

Hmmm...
Dip the bearings and spin the wheels a few times. Sounds easy enough.
Thanks all
