View Full Version : Vapor Lock???? Help!
ericsz Jun 23rd, 08, 01:22 PM Here is the problem, my buddy and I just built a street car 84 camaro 355. Runs really good for about a mile and then it just dies, if you let it sit for about 5-10 minutes it will make it another mile and quit again. The fuel filter was pretty close to the alternator so I put a longer line on it to move it, didnt work, then I felt the fuel line which was sitting on top of the heater hose move that and put a pc of wood between it and any contact with the heater hose, didnt fix it. Only thing left I can think of is spacer on the carb. It has a Street Avenger Holley bolted on out of the box. Runs great for the first mile then dies. What is your opinions???? Thanks!
Timmer Jun 23rd, 08, 02:40 PM May be an issue with the float in the carb. Had the same symptoms in my 69z and it turned out that something had dislodged and was preventing the float from dropping. Rebuilding the Holly is about a biannual task. They hate sitting.
ericsz Jun 23rd, 08, 03:00 PM Carb is brand new.
Scott Taylor Jun 23rd, 08, 03:08 PM Carb is brand new.
All the more reason to suspect it.

hatdragracer Jun 24th, 08, 03:35 PM Just do a simple float check while idling...if Carb is brand new it will have a dvd that shows how to check/set float
How did you rule out an ignition fault?
I assume you checked all the distributor wiring, grounds, battery connetctions etc...
I had a car do this and it turned out to be a broken terminal on the HEI coil
ericsz Jun 25th, 08, 10:44 AM I didnt think it was ignition because the car doesnt just shut down, its like it is flooding out then dies, I set the float levels before we even drove it down the road and then rechecked them again this last time it did it.

The coil or resistor could be heating up and causing the car to die like you stated. I don't know what you are using for an ignition system but even a bad condensor or pickup coil will do the same thing. Don't rule them out without checking.

ericsz Jun 26th, 08, 07:13 AM Here is an update, we put a Wooden 1 inch spacer under the carb and took it for a drive, we went 15 miles round trip no problems thought we had fixed the problem, then we decided to stop and launch the car to see what it would do, as soon as we launched it the car stumbled on its face and died. wouldnt start back up right away let it sit for about 2 minutes and started it back up and got it home when I got home I felt the fuel filter and it was so hot I couldnt touch it, is this normal??? This weekend I am gonna check all ignition stuff just to make sure its fuel related. I am running out of ideas dont know what else to do to it.:angry:
SixtyAte Jun 26th, 08, 02:16 PM Move the fuel lines away from anything that can heat it up. The lines and filter should not get any hotter than the surrounding surfaces. If you hear gurgling sounds from the carb, the fuel is percolating from the heat. If you are sure its heat related, make an aluminum (1/8th or 1/4 in ) plate to go under the carb. Have it about 3 inches wider on each side and 4 or 5 front to back. Whatever size you can fit without touching anything is best. It should help the peculating problem. What temp is the motor running at? Have you considered header wrap to bring under hood temps down.

ericsz Jun 26th, 08, 02:22 PM engine running temp is around 180-190. Not bad at all. I didnt hear any gurgling but I honestly didnt listen for it.
