I have some sort of aftermarket drivers side exterior mirror. I went to put on a NOS one that I had lying around and there seems to be a round aprox. 1 inch hole in the door and it looks to me as if it might have had a remote mirror. Or the door is from a car with that option. The car is painted and I would like to make it look closer to stock.
I have the manual and it does look like the hole is in the correct position. The only problem I can see is that there is no hole on the inside of the door skin that would mate up to the mounting bracket for the bezel and the adjuster on the inner door panel. The door panels are aftermarket and Are not cut for the remote mirror.
Has anyone had any experience with this type of installation.

All doors have the hole in the outer skin regardless of mirror option. The cable is routed to the front inside of the door to a clip & then back through the big hole above & to the right of the window crank near the top. The bezel attaches to the door panel with two screws that go through a piece of sheetmetal placed on the back side of the door panel.

Mark thanks for that. I have only owned 69s and the mirror I tried to install was from a 69 The 68 must have a different bolt pattern for the mounting plate. The plate I had would not line up.
I am talking about the standard mirror. I asssumed that the remote mirror had to be used because of the hole.
Is there a different mounting plate on the 68 compared to the 69. If so I will go with the 68 Standard mirror.

Brian...
My 68 had the original remote mirror removed and the regular 68 mirror bolted in its place. It had the hole in the deluxe door panel but all parts were removed along with the mirror. I bought a repop remote mirror kit after they came out because the original 68 remotes were hard to find or they wanted my first born and $500.00 dollars for it. Any 68 mirror will bolt right up....

I looked at it again yesterday and the holes for the bracket don't line up with the holes on the door. I looks as if the previous owner has filled in one of the holes and has drilled another hole beyond the larger 1inch hole in the door towards the rear of the door. So he could mount the mirror that is on the door now.
Short of doing some body work I will have to live with this mirror. The car is painted and I don't really want to mess with it.
This has been an ongoing battle since I got the car. I just wish people with no clue would leave these cars alone!
