View Full Version : door glass install
paul wilcox Jun 25th, 08, 12:13 AM :confused:Help, I am finishing a long restoration. I installed the door glass but the half round balls mounted to the glass are hitting the felt covered squares mounterd on the door. This is not allowing the glass to go all the way up and holding the glass away from the felt weather strip on the outside top of the door. Any ideas? I have a 68 camaro convertible
Thanks, Paul
maizedog Jun 25th, 08, 07:08 AM Is it the glass that came out of the car originally? I found doing mine that there are thin "balls" and thick "balls". If a thick ball is in place of a thin one the window does what you are talking about. I had the same problem reinstalling mine. Mine turned out to mostly be the in and out adjustment of the track.

Gary L Jun 25th, 08, 07:43 AM The "balls" are supposed to hit the fabric covered metal plates. They push the glass into the weather seal. The felt covered clip moves in and out. The glass is not supposed to ride on that part all the time. It's function is to hang the door panel and help guide the glass.
Ghostbuster Jun 25th, 08, 07:39 PM Hi Paul..
I had the same problem last month..
In my situation, I had mounted the corduroy guides wrong.
They have a curl on the bottom.
This curl slides over a brace in the door, not in front of it..
With the guide pushed out, the ball in the door glass would not slide up far enough.
paul wilcox Jun 25th, 08, 08:35 PM The window is the same (untouched) the door is new. The holes lined up fine for the felt covered squares to mount. Please see attached pichttp://www.flickr.com/photos/27499848@N04/2612383488/

Z15CAM Jun 30th, 08, 01:32 AM Only took me a week to get the glass in my doors to align properly, considering your front fender and doors are hung properly. I've never had a new door position without having to use wooden blocks either on the top of the rear jam or the bottom and using a piece of plywood between your feet and the edge of the door skin with your back against a solid wall warp the door into alignment with the power of leg muscle.
camaro-novice Jul 1st, 08, 12:13 PM Paul,
I don't see an attached pic. If the balls are hitting the bottom edge of the denim guides and not sliding up onto them, then Tony has correctly identified your problem--the guides are mounted wrong. The top of the guides must slide up behind the outer window fuzzies. You may have to loosen the screws/clips in the fuzzies in order to get the guides to go up behind them. If you'll take the guides out, you'll see two places in the inner door frame that curve out from the door toward the car, kind of like humps. They're there for a reason: The curved bottom part of the guides actually hooks up into them. This keeps the balls from striking the bottom edge of the guides (because the edge is pulled out of the way) and makes the balls slide up onto the guides (because the curved surface is now facing the balls as the window comes up). Hope this helps. Like Tony, I had the same problem when I reinstalled my front windows.
clwilcox33 Jul 1st, 08, 01:09 PM Paul, your links for the pictures will need to end in .jpg in the URL before they will post.
Btw, Welcome to Team Camaro!

RickD Jul 2nd, 08, 04:31 PM Which end of the door does the 'thick' ball go vs the 'thin' ball? I can't tell by looking at the tracks.
I'm in the same place. The door glass I took out to replace rollers had thin, blue ball on both ends. The rebuild kit has a thick black one that the diagram shows going on the rear and a thin blue one that goes on the front with a thin plastic washer. To complicate it more, my parts car has the thick black one on the front so I have all the combinations!
TIA
maizedog Jul 3rd, 08, 07:44 AM Rick, I had to get a used pass. door glass and it had a thick and a thin ball on it. The glass was from a 68. The piece of glass I had in the car was a ppg replacement from years ago. The ppg glass that came out had two thin balls on it. I tried the replacement window the way it came, one thick and one thin ball, and it would not line up correctly. I then installed the two thin balls from the original piece of glass and everything lined up well. So I don't know if 68's used a thick and thin ball and 69's use two thin balls? The manual I have also shows a thick and a thin ball for 69.

RickD Jul 3rd, 08, 08:14 AM I sure don't want to pull the glass out and retry once I reinstall it! Looks like we've seen all the combo's. All the vendors show the thick one for the rear and thin for the front. I wonder how much adjustment there is to compensate. Thanks!
paul wilcox Jul 8th, 08, 10:10 PM Sorry here is the photo linkhttp://www.camaros.net/forums/http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l160/paulwilcox/doorball.jpg http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l160/paulwilcox/doorball.jpg
Even with the adjustments all the way back on the window tracks, the balls are keeping the glass about 1/4 inch away from the outer weather strip/ belt moulding.
