General Motors could owe millions of dollars in repair claims and other fees if settlements of two class-action lawsuits are approved in a California state court. The suits involve Dex-Cool engine coolant. GM has used Dex-Cool since the 1995 model year. http://www.fquick.com/blog/Judge_to_rule_on_GM_settlements_for_coolant/1920

That stuff started sludging up in our '02 Impala. I always heard it was because air was getting in the system but I could never find any evidence of that. I flushed it out several times then went with the newer anti freeze. So far, so good.

I just paid $1000 for my wife's Buick Rendezvous intake manifold gasket replacement. Looks like that one is #1 on the list of eligble repairs.

Dex Cool is supposed to keep your temperature up to 20 degrees cooler, but based on this, I don't know if it is worth the chance. How is Global Anti Freeze? Is it better than Dex Cool? Or, should I just go back to good old fashioned Prestone? I never had any issues with Prestone and changed it on a regular basis.

the intake problem is not the coolant its the piss poor design of the intake gaskits even the 3.1 and 3.4s peolple have used green in still come back leaking after 60,000 miles just a junk design. now the sludging problem is the coolant but the new aftemarkit dexcools dont have this problem i did my 96 ss with is and so far after 100,000 miles no sludging.

My .02 worth. The Dex-cool I'll never recommend anyone use it. My Grand Prix with a 3800 needs to be flushed every two years because the radiator sludges up so badly. Pretty frustrating when my 12 year old Ford Explorer, Ford Escape, Mercury Cougar have never had any issues ever with anti-freeze. I should toss in my Dodge Ram I sold recently as well, except the Dodge had LOTS of other problems, so no high marks for Mopar.

I guess I'd better change out the wife's 04 GTO and get the Dex-cool out of it before the LS1 starts plugging up with the garbage GM chooses to use.

I've had two Chevy trucks ( 98 and 99 ) puff their intake gaskets ,
and one of them had a heater core start to plug up as well.

Depending on what minerals are in the water that is added contributes to the issue.

For our customers, the first major service (30k) we flush the cooling system and add regular old green antifreeze...

NEVER try to mix the two... (Goes for Toyota long life coolants as well)

I am not a big fan of Dexcool....

That stuff is crap.
I have a 97 Silverado.
Caused my fitting in the intake manifold to corrode & sprung a leak, plus I have coolant leaking into the cylinders,It has been leaking/loosing coolant after one year of buying it new.
Lots of sludge in the radiator. Only after 20,000 miles, it is supposed to be 100,000 mile coolant,,,correct?

So, what's a good alternative for an aluminum LS engine?
