: how can i make a 89 iroc stock faster
mjrad Jun 26th, 08, 05:44 AM i got beat by a little 4 banger puddle jumper honda p o s
what a disappointment
what is the best way to make a stock 89 iroc faster ,as for as turbo
or supercharging ?
or more like what is the most affordable way.
additionally i have an internal overhaeting problem
so i am going to have to take those heavy heads off anyway.
any suggestions on what to look for ,
or do i have to even go that far could it be radiator or waterpump,
nothing drips to the ground ,but its always running hot to the point of over heating temp maxes out THEN fan comes on?
and than starts to cool down.
always adding about half a gallon of antifreez ?
thanks
dsherw00d Jun 26th, 08, 07:52 AM What's the motor - 305 TPI, 350 TPI, or TBI? If TPI Headers/Exhaust are the 1st step. Then heads, TB porting, Injectors, runners, etc. After this, then maybe supercharge or something. I don't know how much of this a stock and perhaps a bit worn bottom end will take. If it's a 305, you are only going to get so much and it may not be worth it.
Sounds like maybe a head gasket leak if you aren't seeing fluid leaking anywhere else. It might be burning out the exhaust. Any hint of white smoke? Also check oil.

mjrad Jun 26th, 08, 04:26 PM its a 89 5.7 liter tpi z28 iroc
there is no smoke.
hollowed out cat,
everything else is new ,all new coolant senors, egr, temp switch,
stock 190 t-stat
radiator reads a 60 degree difference form the bottom to the top with
an infrored temp gun
some shakiness at 70 mph,but is also slow to reaching 125+
bottom end seems like its lacking power too
any idea s
thanks
wiskeesour Jun 26th, 08, 04:34 PM Something wrong with your car then.
Mine is a 305. I got an adjustable fuel press regulator and better ignition, your same TB, and that thing scares my wife....
Gaurantee you an import off the street wont catch it.
mjrad Jun 26th, 08, 08:15 PM ok just did a block test ,combution gases are present ,so it looks like im doing a head gasket and new rad this weekend
thanks for all your help.

This for starters would help. I have this set up. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=EDL%2D3890&N=700+115&autoview=sku
Or this Supercharger http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=VOR%2D3GF218%2D068&N=700+115&autoview=sku
mjrad Jun 30th, 08, 11:26 AM wow got the heads off ,that was similar to working .
well the intake and exhaust valves are very white ,
lots of carbon build on top of pistons as well ,looks very black and
the coolant ports look fine maybe just clean them out ,but the front two
coolant ports look like rust ?
the heads are cast so i dont think im going to pressure check them.
other than that very dirty .
any ideas ,350 5.7 liter 89 iroc
thanks
wiskeesour Jun 30th, 08, 12:04 PM ....well the intake and exhaust valves are very white .....
Should be brown or even black. White doesnt sound good. Something is wrong here. Speed density system? or MAF? I forget. Speed Density, right?
mjrad Jun 30th, 08, 09:17 PM this is a mass air flow system.
dont know for sure if that matters for white valves ,
could it be that its running rich ,
also one cylinder is super clean ,possibly from coolant ?
also old head gasket was in tact ,no tears or nothing ?
cant see were it possibly was leaking or even if it was the head gasket ?
the only other thing i can think of is a cracked block and i am not excepting
that .
anyone have any ideas here
thanks
Philip Aug 2nd, 08, 03:02 PM also one cylinder is super clean ,possibly from coolant ?
cant see were it possibly was leaking or even if it was the head gasket ?
Yes, the coolant will remove all the carbon from the combustion chamber.
If the leak was slow it is not always possible to see where the gasket was leaking.
I have the heads off the 89 350 TPI motor in my El Camino, it has some white residue on most of the valves. I do not think it is anything to worry about.
Mine is apart because I sucked a flat washer down thru the intake into the #5 cylinder. Made a lot of noise but thankfully it did not hurt anything (other then my wallet).
First time for me disassembling the TPI set up. Quite a time consuming ordeal to get the intake apart and a real PIA. Today it is all going back together, just taking a lunch break right now.
