: What can I expect from this motor?
shore-power Jun 27th, 08, 05:38 PM Just built a 331 (327 .030 over) with forged internals and flat top 4 impression pistons, iron angle plug 2.02 heads shaved 20 thousanths, Comp. cams 280H cam, Edlebrock torquer single plane intake, 750 Holley carb, mallory unalite dist. & coil.
This motor is going in my 67 Camaro which is a factory 327, 4 speed car that I removed the 4 spd years ago and installed a th400 & a GER 3500 stall converter. I kept everything to put the 4 spd back in if I want to. But I want to drag race the car a bit. I have a 10 bolt 3:70 posi in it now but also have a 12 bolt posi with 4:56 gears but that can be installed with any gear. No sub frame conectors and no traction bars, but I know I need to install some.
Would like opinions on gear / trans combos and opinions on getting this car to hook & leave good. And also what kind of performance should I expect? thanks
ace's68 Jun 28th, 08, 03:52 AM I have some what of a similar set up on a .040" 327 so I will try and help you out.
Comp cams 286H magnum 58cc 2.02/1.60 aluminum heads, 4 valve relief pistons, deck height, team-g single plane, .015" and somewhere around 10.5:1
Basically it's a dog down low but screams in the upper rpm band and pulls really well around 3,000 and above.
The 3.73 will benefit you from being a dog down low but I think a 4.56 would be overkill, most bracket cars/dragsters usually don't run that low of a gear mainly because your rpm will be maxed out in top gear before you hit the final trap. Have you thought of cal-tracs or slide a links instead of slapper bars?
I would guess mid 12's with your set up since I know of someone who has the same set up as me on a 350 and runs mid 12's but he also has an auto.

shore-power Jun 28th, 08, 04:37 PM Thanks for the reply. Yes I have looked at the cal tracs and thats what Im planning to use. Need to decide on a set of sub frame connectors as well.??
I was looking to get into the 13's. I think thats realistic & a 13 sec. street car is respectable IMHO..
pdq67 Jun 28th, 08, 06:29 PM Imho, ditch the 280 Magnum hy-cam for their 282S solid.
Then install a good old Holley 300-36, true high-rise dual plane intake.
And go back to a 4-speed stick along w/ the 12-bolt and at least 3.31 gears b/c gas is so high priced now!
It will be weak down low so just gently roll her outta the hole BUT don't worry about it b/c once she hit's 3,000 rpm, nail her and hold on AND take her to at least 7,000+ rpm and then grab another gear!!
What a HOOT by me!!

shore-power Jun 28th, 08, 06:56 PM NO experiance with solid lifter cams? Dont they need a fair amount of adjustment from time to time? I had thought the modern hydraulics were way better?? I value your opinion, convince me?:)
pdq67 Jun 29th, 08, 06:47 AM I always lashed my solids when they got a tad louder is all. Generally after my second oil change once they set in from a rebuild is all.
They will sound like a "sewing machine", justa tapping away! Music to my ears!
You can gain up to like 4 percent more power everywhere w/ a good solid lifter cam b/c it can "whack" the lifter up faster than a hy-cam and this creates a slightly better suck which equate's to more torque!
Please PM Mark, (aka, mbrekke), and ask him how he like's his Isky Z-25 solid lifter cam in his fresh 327?

speedshifter Jun 29th, 08, 06:14 PM I agree on the solid lifter and intake suggestions. Hy cams won't get you to the RPM you want to be in your mouse. But I don't think 4.56 gears are too low at all for the drags. 7000 RPM with a 28" tire and 4.56:1 is 127 MPH! You'll never hit redline in the quarter in high gear. If you want to set it up for the highway that's a different story, though, so you decide.
If you can afford CalTracs I think that's the way to go. I fabbed my own adjustable pinion snubber for free and my car now hooks very well. And people think I'm just running leaf springs!
Z15CAM Jun 29th, 08, 07:42 PM I've a 327 + .30" with the 4 Bolt 010 block decked .020", forged large journal 68 crank, SIR Rods, TRW Forged Dome pistons giving me a 10.75 Static Compression and the 68 1.94/1.5 64cc heads which I built to 2.02/1.6 Grumpy Jenkins Specs (Never Again - LOL). Manley Pro Flow Severe duty Valves, RKM Shaft Roller Rockers, Edlebrock RPM with a Holly 750DP. I run a Sigerson F296-1 Mechanical Flat Tappet. GM 4 Quart Vette Pan with Windage Tray. Will rev 8000rpm easily. HP (guessing) would be approx 425Hp.
This is a spare engine for my 70 z28 or if I decide to swap out the BBC. I did one for a friend running 6" rods and 350 pistons.
If you are on the street all the time and not at the Strip I would suggest Crane FireBall or a Marine Cam - something to keep the Torque Band wide as possible. I've built lots of 327's in my day - LOL
