View Full Version : quick question for those with caltracs
darko Jul 1st, 08, 12:07 AM i'm going to make a pair of them and was wondering if I could get some dimensions.
What size bolt and threads are the heim joints ( i was probably going to use 3/4 thread with a 5/8 bolt hole)
what is the OD of the tubing
How far apart are the two holes spaced on the front bracket that the rod can bolt into
on the front bracket how far is the top hole riding on the spring from the hole that bolts into the leaf spring
thanks!

hah, i've had that site bookmarked for years now. I just wanted to compare what that site has with the actual design of the caltracs.
Also I didnt want to do the rods like that site states, I wanted to use a tube with weld in threaded inserts instead of just tapping the ID of a tube
camaro_fever68 Jul 1st, 08, 12:43 AM Good, Maybe with the info you get and the info from that site, we'll both be able to build some good Cal-trac replicas!!!
DOUG G Jul 1st, 08, 03:46 AM I built a set using that site as a guide. Helm joints are 3/4 x 3/4 on mine, DOM tube with welded inserts (I made also),from the pivot to the top bolt that hits the spring I think is 3" to clear spring pocket, and the lower hole (only made one) is 3" also.... My cars in the body shop so all this is by memory.(should be close :D )

so you got 1" id DOM tubing? What was the wall thickness?
DOUG G Jul 1st, 08, 03:18 PM Pipe goes by ID.
Not 100% on this but think it was 1/8" wall ???
It ended up at approx. 21" long finished.
At 1.64 60's it still fine. But just incase I have some 1 1/8" solid stock that just needs drilled and tapped :D
LCAC_Man Jul 1st, 08, 06:42 PM 1" i.d. DOM .125" wall would be more than plenty for that application (I've been considering making my own as well), this is were I get my stuff for my off-road projects. No need for a heim-joint in that application, a bushing style end will do the job and be quieter.

DOUG G Jul 1st, 08, 06:47 PM Len, just took a look at that site and they have some pretty cool stuff...
Thanks.

I think I've financed a small portion of that website construction....

yea i buy my stuff from poison spyder and summit but that website has a better selection and prices.(i used to build rockcrawler suspensions)

if you look at the load rating on the heim joints, you can see they are the same models that summit sells(summit brand), with a markup
also i don't think it would be a good idea to run a bushing. When load is applied on the arm i think it would be better to have as little movement as possible...because when you take off the bushing will compress and then rebound on the spring.
i can fab a set up for about $150 in parts and a couple hours of time....so I just dont see the point in paying $350 for a set.
DOUG G Jul 2nd, 08, 02:01 PM I couldn't afford them and found the site and thought... I have everything at work, and can do it.... few hours with the boss on vacation, done :D

darko Jul 2nd, 08, 04:03 PM if anybody wants, for a small fee I can make a bunch of these and mail them out!
