Hi All,

Pulled apart my power steering box on my 67 as it was binding when turned to the left, should the inside be full of grease? or should it be lubricated when pump is in action?

I ask as the inside of mine was dry...?

Thanks

The power steering fluid is supposed to circulate through the power steering gear. It provides lubrication as well as the pressure for power assist. If the system has been driven "dry" as you describe I think that the power gear as well as the power steering pump are both probably ruined. You should replace the full gear assembly as well as the power steering pump.

Jim,

Thanks for the reply. I thought that might be the case with the lubricant. It hasnt been driven dry im the middle of restoration. Cheers

Rumor has it that if you replace/rebuild the pump and box, replace the hoses too, since nasty stuff can accumulate there and/or they get old...

If you get ambitious, tear down the pump and see how simple (and great) it is. Little pieces of sheet metal constantly lubed to make vanes for a pump...

Clever cheap devils!
