Depends on what size 10 bolt -- what it fits -- and posi/non posi

The big 10 bolts (8.5") that fit the first gens are going easily $800 on up. The stock first gen 10 bolts (8.2") are not so desirable.

Agreed. A High HP engine will snap the 8.2. Which one is it and does it have POSI?

I might consider buying it.

It is posi. How high of h.p will hurt the rear-end if it's 8.2? My engine will be a re-built 327. I know the 10 bolt has the bigger, more sturdy bolts. I don't know if it's the 8.5 or 8.2.

Unless it's a really hot 327, I think you'll be fine with an 8.2. The drag strip (traction) is where you hurt these rears. I ran one into the low 11's before I finally broke it. It ran mid 12's for a few years with 3.73 gears and an Auburn posi unit.

It's real easy to tell the difference between an 8.2 and an 8.5 The 8.5 has lugs located on both sides at the bottom of the center section, see pic.

I'll see the rear-end today. I was told it had over $2,000 in the re-build and had the bigger bolts (?) or more bolts, as described above by Ray (THANKS RAY) I have to keep reminding Tom (Nelsonracingengines.com) I'm not trying to build a hotrod, just a nice drivetrain with the "right" stuff; for me personally and for re-sell value. I spend time here looking at old threads and posts,... but things are moving pretty fast now and appreciate all the help I can get.

the 8.5 had ring gear bolts with 3/4" heads, the 8.2 had 9/16" headed bolts, hope this helps

thanks Zman. If I had it to do over, I probably would have gotten a good used 12 bolt. the buy building my engine jus so happens to have built 2 of the fastest Camaros on the planet (literally: go to YouTUbe: "F-bomb, 1200 h.p." I don't know if he even knows how to build a mellow engine, we'l see!. thanks.

i know the F-bomb a good built 8.5" is plenty good for 99% of the first gens on the road- ask me how i know- i have built 40-50 of them - i have no need for a 12 bolt anymore

really!? that's good to hear. I'm learning as I go, myself. Some people say rebuilding an engine is like putting a pool in your back yard... you'll usually get your money back. The question is: if you build an $80,000 pool, will you get it all back.

8.2" here and still having fun (at least until the accident). Was $637 in parts for ring & pinion,Eaton posi, and install kit.

8.2" doesn't carry much value.

how much of the "sturdiness" is in the gears, and how much is in the housing as far as taking stress? which is more likely to go out w/too much hp?
