View Full Version : mud flaps...yes, no?

Trying to decide whether to install a set of mud flaps... on just the back, or all four wheels?

Been to the archives to see what has been written in the past as to how well they worked...like the "additive issues"... some were for it... some not. Even some of the monitors were using them.

My first '67 came with them, the smaller stainless type, and they didn't look that bad, and after seeing the small rock chip damage to the rear finders last night (and I stay away from gravel roads), I'm considering putting them on this '68.

Rather than the perm rubber flap type, I found where the vettes have a smaller clear type that is detachable as well...and am considering these as well.

So, was wondering if anyone has come across a quality type flap that might suit this purpose of protecting the fenders... if only the rears?

Has anyone one considered these as well?

Nice chrome or clear flaps protect your paint and aren't bad looking. My opinion, protect your paint.....

with the wider tires so many like me use, the flaps keep the rocks from chipping paint. I use the flaps on the back only, been lucky on the front.

Jim, those flaps look OK. Did you pick them up from a GM centre?

I saw something recently on My Classic Car about mudflaps, they were discussing new products with somebody from NPD. They had some removable mudflaps that use "soft rubber grips" to attach to the wheelhouse lip, require no drilling, and can be put on for driving and removed once you get to a show, etc. Seem like a pretty neat product. I looked them up and they are on page 109 of the current NPD catalog. If my camaro ever gets back from paint I might try them out.

Edit: Here's the catalog description:

I will take the "hate mud flaps" side... imo mudflaps are for trucks and the 1970's when tires stuck out a foot. I would rather scrape off the rubber and deal with the chips hands down. Of course, it's all personal preference.
Now if I had a really high end paint job and was worried about it, the 3M clear stick on film you see on new cars a lot now is real discreet, I've seen it on a Camaro or two and I think it looks fine, I don't think it's extremely expensive either. People just put it on the inward slope of the quarter panel up to the seam and it really doesn't show much.

Mud-Flaps = Heck yeah :hurray:
Now if I can only find a Gun-rack that will fit a convertible I'll be all set l:)

ps: I've never had a big rock/gravel chip/ding issueout here, but I did put the clear film over the nose and rear quarter lower area years ago on a past coupe I drove in Colorado to prevent road-rash issues.

I use great big rubber ones, like Click does, on all 4 wheels. Plain black ones, almost invisible. The fronts are an inch off the ground, and scrape around turns with several people aboard.

I'd never say I like em, but they save my paint and they will stay on.
They screw on, and I put them thru the original screwholes for the trim.

IMO id rather have the mud flaps and be able to drive the car then spend $ at the painter, have them on my car front and back, you cant even tell unless your looking because of the tires..

Got mine from local farm fleet store I think, cheapies but they work. Im like the other guys, rather have some flaps than pay someone to repaint my quarter panels. :D

I dont like mud flaps but use the...picked up a set from Classic industiries back in the 80s with a grey "camaro" along the bottom.
With modern radials and wider tyres gravel and debis id flicked up so much more , tiny chiping lower door and rear panels...being a daily this I may notice more so than those with weekend cars.
I have mounted as low as possible and as far outside as possible
Doing so, if one backs up over a curb, the will get caught between curb and tyre and rip off
Over 20 yrs they have lasted very well.

Well, over the years I survived the mud flap craze, the side exhaust header craze and most important, the Moon/Sun roof craze. Whew. I never bit on any of them. Hell, my rear spring shackles have never been wrenched, only washed. Whew again.
Like JimM says, to be effective they have to nearly touch the ground. Back in the old days when owners actually drove these cars on muddy roads and driveways, I kept watch. The flaps only kept the smallest area of paint behind them clear of crud. Practically useless unless they're like Jims. As for rock protection, use flex-add with your paint in chip prone areas. Also learn to fill the chips with Green Stuff prior to painting. Makes it a lot easier than sanding the paint all the way down. Of course these methods are for original style lacquer paint. Don't know much about the new finishes. But I keep reading. Like this month’s Hot Rod. OK, I'll fess up. To me, mud flaps are ugly!

I don,t like the looks of them but I put some plain black ones on mine. After the first trip with out them my 1/4 pannels were covered with road tar. I like the plain black ones I think they are less noticeable. I used existing holes so I can remove them without damage. I like the looks of the clip on ones in the other post I may look into them.

I have a peice of polished stainless I've been saving for the day my Camaro is finally finished.I will make flaps that look like the ones I remember from my first 69 waaaay back in 73. If anyone asks ...... It's period correct for the car. I'm mounting them out and low so the car stays clean when driven in the rain.

I would rather have chips......

 Wow I thought I was the only one there for awhile. I figure either it's a driver or it's a trailer queen, and whichever it is to each their own, but if you drive it you'll get bugs and chips (and in my and many others' case chunks of rubber :D), and I'm ok with that. You can buy a 50k $ driver and it's going to get chips eventually too, no big deal. I don't even see it as a big issue for that matter, the only serious gravel times around here are in the snow and if you are worried about chips my guess is the car is parked, maybe you guys need to keep it under 60 on the gravel roads....
Now door dings, thats a different story.....

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Will look into those "Splash Guards" that were mentioned by Mike, and will also, see about those clear ones that the vette guys were using.

With the high costs of keeping the buggy up to snuff, being a little proactive never hurt anybody.

I made these from brushed stainless, they need cleaning in this pic but they look nice I think. They help at the drag strip with rocks and rubber hitting the paint.

Jul 9th, 08, 12:02 PM
Well in my exhaustive wind tunnel testing my design was able to withstand 200mph runs. The quarter panels actually fail before the mud flaps. With nothing to hang on to we had to estimate higher speeds and concluded that they will withstand 245mph runs.

I put them on the back of my 69 and didn't want to drill holes in my NOS wheel moldings so I put electrical tape on the moldings and used heavy duty spring-loaded paper clips to hold them on and they work great! I didn't put them on the front and don't seem to need them!

In the day , I had the black flaps when I ran the Goodyear H-70 x 15's. They help but as I got older I learned that the clear 3M type stone guards sheets could be applied to front and back. I have had these on for last 10 years and no problems and you can't tell they are there. You can also get this stuff from Invisamask people. I made the power tour with it applied in place of a bra on the front end. No issues.

This thread is too funny! ...and brings back fond memories.

Back in the '80s I had a buddy with a mullet (oddly he was from DC) and we nicknamed him "mudflap" because of the similarity and over the years abbreviated it to "flap".

He no longer has the flap but still carries the name.... LOL! ....and still a great friend.

Anyway... my vote is for no mudflaps (my buddy being the only exception).

Dave
