Nice Dave, very nice! I have to ask though, was all that heavy equipment shown in the 2nd pic really necessary? I think your contractor may be over charging you... ;)

Congrats Dave .

Joe Harrison Jul 8th, 08, 10:47 PM My 67 will be showing up there sometime soon. Talked to Chris but I have not yet had time to get things together for it to be picked up. You might get the new place up before I get a chance or it just might go to the old place?
Joe

As long as you got some running water and something a couple of rungs above an outhouse, I should be good to go. What color velour? Do I bring my own fuzzy dice, or is that included in the rent. I need to get all these questions sorted out before I make my final decision.
alanrw Jul 9th, 08, 09:14 AM Jeez Dave, if the garage is that big, how big will the house be? Where will the gift shop be?

Chris is probably better on the specifics. It's 6000' (60x100). Front strip will be offices, break room, bathrooms, etc. Back half will be P/B area.
We'll have drop-downs throughout for the compressed air, and the booth and blow heaters are gonna burn a lot of natural gas

Well, hopefully....
We're still early enough in the build to hear some thoughts/suggestions about what you guys have done that has worked well. There's always something that other brains can conjure up.
So if you have 'em, let's hear 'em
dreamweaver Aug 26th, 08, 10:53 PM What are you using for heat? Central heating system?
RamAirDave Aug 26th, 08, 11:00 PM What are you using for heat? Central heating system?
Initially we were going to go with radiant heat, but have heard negative feedback from those that use it. Leaning towards NG blow heaters.
dreamweaver Aug 26th, 08, 11:23 PM What's your cost per therm for NG out there?
RamAirDave Aug 26th, 08, 11:39 PM Don't know for sure without checking the bill. Remember it being just over $1/CCF combined in the spring, but fluctuates of course. With just a small radiant heater in Chris' hole in the current shop, it neared $200/month during the winter
The "new" bake booth is run on NG, so the use of gas can't be avoided completely as far as I know.
dreamweaver Aug 27th, 08, 12:12 AM A couple of these miht be a good investment...
http://www.enviro.com/images/manuals-brochures/brochures/Maxx%20brochure%20June%202008%20low%20res.pdf
click Aug 27th, 08, 07:36 AM Ive had radiant Wirsbo slab heat in my 3 car garage and full basement and its fantastic. Its held 25psi for 11 years now, no leaks, heats perfectly and evenly. Im putting it in my farm house when we move in the basement addition and new attached garage again too. I know many folks with it around here and its cold in winter but they all swear by it. Huge architect/engineering company used Wirsbo in their new building, they love it. No cold spots anywhere. Not sure if proper installation was a problem for those who didnt like it that you spoke too but Id do it in a snap :)
Gary L Aug 27th, 08, 08:48 AM Click is right. In-slab radiant heat is nice. Probably too late since your slab is in. But, what are you doing for cooling? Is evap cooling used much in your area? Looks like @ 90 deg/50% RH you could blow 77 deg air in your shop. You would need a lot of air. You are probably using a thru the wall air conditioner for the offices or a roof top unit to get a little relief from the shop.
angelglo Aug 28th, 08, 10:14 AM cnbc just had a piece on geothermal green heating. looked interesting.
click Aug 28th, 08, 10:36 AM angel is right, geo thermal heating makes so much sense. either with tubes buried in the yard or drilled wells to capture heat from below frost levels, or air to air exchanging heat pumps, its all free heat in a way. If 50% of homes in cold climates went to geothermal, that would cut gas and oil and elec. use tremendously, leaving those energy sources for others, to increase their supply, reducing the price, in normal logic.
Hope more folks look into it.
angelglo Aug 28th, 08, 10:40 AM it was interesting. the guy says a few feet under ground is 55 degrees all the time. so when its cold, it raises your temp to 55 and you can use alternate heat source to raise it higher. when its hot, the geothermal lowers the temp to 55.
click Aug 28th, 08, 11:07 AM Our ground source heat pump takes our 50 degree well water and bumps it up to 110 degrees with a compressor, that then blows thru the furnace fan into the home and thru the floor tubes in Wirsbo. In summer, the 50 degrees is used for a/c and it cools the house FAST.
RamAirDave Aug 28th, 08, 08:49 PM The radiant heat we were/are considering isn't slab heat, but the overhead units.
Don't know much about geothermal, pretty sure it isn't common around here at least, but might look into it and see if it is viable financially.
Gary L Aug 28th, 08, 09:17 PM Geothermal is expensive due to the wells that have to be drilled. You are talking about quartz or gas radiant heaters I think.
This is kind of fun trying to help you spend your $$.
RamAirDave Aug 28th, 08, 09:24 PM This is kind of fun trying to help you spend your $$.
Funny guy, G :D
We definitely don't have bottom-less pockets, we're working on a limited budget here.
We're looking at floor coatings. Our initial finds say that Hard Deck takes 28 days for cure, but I think some info got mixed up there. That won't work, but still looking into more info on it.
click Aug 29th, 08, 08:08 AM You dont have to have drilled wells for geothermal either. They also use long trenches you backhoe in the yard or under driveway or parking area. Dug down 6', you spread out pex hose that arrive in coils of 100', then you spread them them out like a slinky being stretched sideways. You might need 3 or 4 trenches of them, an energy audit will tell you. Then the green antifreeze is put thru the Pex hoses and recycled back and forth from the heat pump out thru the coils, picking up that 55 degree temp from the ground, then cycled back to the heat pump again.
If you have a Florida Heat Pump dealer around, talk to them. Stay away from Econ Aire and any outfit that with odd brand names, less than 3 years old, they might not be up to date. :)

I'm not heating anywhere near what you are, but I have the overhead in my shop. 16ft ceiling with 12" insulation, 1113 sq ft. I KNOW it gets a lot colder here too and my heat bill hasn't gone over $45/month yet.

It's in good hands!! Not like where it was before. Also had a life matter come up and I think they even kept me in the Q for my work. Can't ask for more than that!!
Maybe not this summer for her to be on the road but she will be next summer for sure!! I still have major work to still do after i get her back from Dave and Chris

Joe, your car will be fun. Some creativity with it. Hope you like what we're gonna do with it
