I have a 55 Bel-Air and i am wondering how do you test the fuel gauge to see if it is good? it shows no reading when hooked up and i am wondering if the coils are shorted out

well i can tell u i check mine on my camaro by taking the sender out of the tank and seen that the contact that is connected to the float was worn and not brushing against the variable resistor coil.

I dont know how a 55 chevy fuel gage is hooked up but I can tell you how a camaro works. The fuel sending unit is 90 ohms. You should be able to take a meter and check resistance on the sending unit. It should read between zero and 90 depending on how much gas you have in the tank. IE 45 ohms should be 1/2 tank. If you disconnect the sending unit wire it will go past full. If you ground the sending unit wire to the chassis ground and turn the key on it should go to empty. If it does then your gage and wire are good. Check to make sure you have a good ground. If you are reading high resistance on the sending unit it is probably bad.

What does your gage show when the wire on the sending unit is disconnected and the key is on.

Measure sending unit to ground and some resistance should show dependent upon fuel level in tank. No resistance, broken, bent, corroded wiper arm on sending unit or bad ground at sending unit.

Should also be some voltage from gauge to sending unit.

Scott, what did you find on the fuel gage problem??????
