I have purchased an original subframe in nice condition. The big holes on the inside of the subframe at the front (tow holes) are perfect and I would like to keep them that way and use them. Has anyone welded 1/4 plates here? Is 1/4 too thick? I was thinking about welding on a plate that contours the top and bottom of the subframe and has the hole in the center.
I basically don't want to stretch the holes!
What have you guys done?

Mine came with no hole! :)
Some early 67's were like that, I have been contacted by other early owners who had a hole on one side and no hole on the other.
I would leave them alone, they are plenty strong. I suspect they were either used on the assembly line or for delivery tie down, or perhaps to weaken the frame horns for crash safety.

Doug, what happened? That looks terrible...
Did the trailer get hit so hard the wheels came off or am I just not seeing them or the fender?

Yes truck was hit down the driver side where he hit the trailer (2 axles & 4 wheels) and must have had one wheel on it which his front end went down the trailer and Camaro ripping one axle and both wheels off the trailer, put me into a ditch where I hit a telephone pole ripping the other axle and both wheels off.... Big mess to say the least.
Trailer is scrap
Camaro in shop with 7K in damage
Truck going in soon with 1600 (and change) in repairs
Insurance paying the bill.
