I am trying to keep my '67 Camaro as original as possible but I'm having a tough time. Is there anyway to restore Tail Lamp Bezels? The black paint is really coming off on mine and the chrome is showing through. Can I just touch them up with some paint or is there a shop out there I can send them too? Thanks in advance!

Chris, pretty common with 40 year old cars.
My 67 did the same. I cleaned off what was left of the paint with laquer thinner and a soft bristle brush, then painted them with paint from I think was SEM which is available from any auto paint supply houses. I used a satin black. I really dont know the correct color, other than black.

You might want to check with CFunk...a member on this site. He sent for a set from Classic Bow Ties, and seemed to be pretty happy with his.

I did a search for you and they can be found on the "classicbowties" site for $144, along with a blurb describing them.

Chris, if the chrome is not all pimpled or pitted and it's just a matter of the black paint wearing off, I say pull them out, mask the chrome and paint them yourself with a coat or two of semi-flat black and put 'em back in. Bada-bing bada-boom.

I had a chance to look at some of the high-priced repops at Carlisle this year and I'm glad I didn't order them sight-unseen. They are OK, but like almost all reproduction stuff, they are not quite right. The 'grain' pattern in the black area looks nothing like the original GM parts. Most people won't know or care, but if you know what you are looking at they scream ‘repop’.

There are enough original tail light bezels out there that if yours need more than a simple repaint job, you can afford to be choosy and wait for a nice set to come along. They are not rare by any means.

Thanks all for the advice. I ordered some "authentic" GM authorized (yeah right) repos for the car. That way I can still drive it. I'm going to take mine off and really take my time taping and painting them. Once again, THANKS!

Chris, even if "pimpled" they can be fixed, but it's a tedious pain in the butt to remedy... trust me!

I carefully dremeled off the tops of the pimples, which of course left small pits. These were filled and then carefully sanded down. They were painted, and still look good after 6/7 years. I tend to get a fair bit of comments on the good shape that they are in. But make sure that the chrome is in good shape before you spend the time doing this.

Admittedly, the repros are not as good as the orig...I've got an extra orig set put aside in case some jerk rear ends me.

My bezels are in great shape minus the paint. I was actually surprised how good the chrome is. I'll put the originals back on as soon as I get them painted.

I assume this process will work the same way with my center console? Chrome is great but the black is a little worn. I have a show on the 9th so hopefully I can get this all done. If not well we'll just see how my first show turns out. thanks again!

Ah-yup. Be sure to wash it good to get rid of any dirt and finger oils. I am in the process of repainting one right now with Rustoleum 7777 Semi-flat black paint. I masked off the inside of the compartment so that I didn't get paint on the flocking. So far so good.
