It's long, and will keep you busyfor a while.
Short version:
Get a rebuilt power steering box for a late 80's Camaro "with special suspension" (IROC Z)
along with an adapter kit from Lee Enterprises (hose flare seat adapters and ragjoint)
It will give you 2 1/2 turns lock to lock, with a "high effort" modern feel.
Microgiant Jul 16th, 08, 09:24 AM Skip the 69 box and get a 3rd gen box. See the sticky at the top. Even if you get the cardone 12:1 ratio they are the way to go as opposed to a 69 box which prob will have the same feel as your 67. You can use Lee inserts to adapt your existing power steering lines or I just used copper crush washers and they work just fine as well.
camaro_fever68 Jul 16th, 08, 10:02 AM I like the Lares 3rd gen box. I didn't have to run any adapters or special lines. It also comes with the rag joint for a bolt-in trouble free installation. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1964-76-GM-FAST-RATIO-power-steering-gear-w-coupler_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742Q2em153Q2el 1262QQcategoryZ33589QQihZ021QQitemZ310002620189QQt cZphoto
67ss camaro Jul 16th, 08, 11:09 AM sorry guys i forgot to mention that i live in melbourne australia i can get my hands on a 69 variable box and possibly a mid to late 80,s iroc box which is best?
400bird Jul 16th, 08, 12:58 PM Do you like the way your stock box feels (as far as steering effort)?
The 69 box will feel the same as the stock one
The late 80's Iroc box on the other hand has much better feel and less assist.
tgifford5 Jul 16th, 08, 01:31 PM I just checked on Rick's site to see what they list for power steering boxes. They list 3 different ratios, but all are fitment for 67-69. So the 69 should fit. I replaced mine with an AGR variable ratio, direct fit. No mods. I love it. Got my old one lying around if you want to rebuild it. PM if interested.
Eric Kammerer Jul 16th, 08, 01:59 PM You can read up on the 69 boxes on http://www.pozziracing.com/camaro_steering.htm#Steering%20box%20and%20ratio%2 0info
As others have said, they are still "pinky steer" for effort.
Muadi Jul 21st, 08, 12:56 PM If the 3rd gen box is purchased, as many of you have recommended, will it bolt directly in?

I did read the full link to the 3rd gen upgrade. I was looking at this one that camaro_fever68 posted. I called them up. The steering box they use is a 77-79 box, updated to 3rd gen gearing that we are looking for. The advantage to the box listed above is that it still uses the same fittings that our 1st gen Camaros have for the power steering lines. No adapters are needed. Bolt in the new rag join supplied with kit, bolt in the ps box, bleed, align if needed, and drive.
They do charge a $35 core to entice you to return your old one, but, shipping a 32lb ps box is pretty expensive.

The guys at Lares are great! Very helpful if you call or email them with questions. I am a happy customer. Here is their website: http://www.larescorp.com/
JimM Jul 22nd, 08, 09:22 AM As far as our Aussie users, The "thirdgen box" is a standard auto parts store item, you should be able to find one.
Also, I'd say the odds are about 99% that you can spec a suitable saginaw high effort fast ratio box from a hiperf Monaro or something like that. A jeep Grand Cherokee box will also work, except the internal steering stops are different Jeeps turn sharper than our camaros do.
ALL the saginaw recirculating ball power steering boxes use the same case and mounting bolts.
In the early 80's, they went to metric o-ring fittings and a smaller input shaft.
Floating around that sticky somewhere is a GM part number for a ragjoint from some kind of van that is a fit for the thirdgen box and the camaro column. This should be buyable at any GM dealer in the world.
batboy Sep 15th, 08, 11:39 AM To answer the original post, yes the 69 variable ratio power steering gear box will fit in the 67 or 68. I have one in my 68 and it's a nice improvement over the standard manual gear that was in the car originally.
There are several available alternatives nowadays as several folks have pointed out (the 3rd generation box is one option).
I think all 69 PS gear boxes were variable ratio. I believe there were two flavors: regular and fast ratio (which were mainly found in Z28 and SS models).
