View Full Version : Correct coil springs 69 Z28 RS
othal Jul 17th, 08, 09:43 AM I have recently restored my 69 RS Z28.When I purchased the car the front height look to be close to correct. I have purchased and installed new coil springs twice. The last set came from Rick's code EY 3925814.The car front now sits 2" lower than the rear measuring from center of axle to wheel well or 1 1/4" measuring by the AIM specs from the floor to rocker. Looking at the Moog chart and everything I read the EY is equal to Moog 6308. My original springs still had the original EY 3925814 tag attached. According to the Moog chart the spring should be .64 wire dia. and 14.981" free height. My original is unquestionably .61 and 15.50" free height. I realize that the free height has probabably collapsed a certain amount over 40 years. I think what originally came on the car was equal to a MOOG 6314 which measures .61 wire dia. and 16.446"free height. Is it possible that GM tagged this spring with the EY 3925814? To raise the car the needed 2" does it sound resonable that the Moog 6314 is the correct spring for me? I really hate to continue re-installing the springs.
400bird Jul 17th, 08, 05:13 PM You might try Eaton Detroit springs, I have heard lots of good things about these guys and they have every spec. to make the springs just like the factory and set your car at the right height.
RamAirDave Jul 17th, 08, 05:44 PM 6308s sit fairly low. How do they compare to these?:

I only have 11.25" in the front. The rear is 13.25". The original springs that came out of the vehicle was coded EY. Everything that I am reading says that an EY code is the same as the MOOG 6308. but the measurements are similar to a MOOG 6314. Your car height looks to be exactly what I am trying to acheive.
RamAirDave Jul 17th, 08, 11:43 PM Don't know what to tell ya. Ive read of issues with springs ordered through the checklist at Ricks. Ive never done so, I just use Pozzi's chart
6308s can be bought locally for under $100/pr and I have yet to see them go wrong.

alanrw Jul 19th, 08, 08:44 AM Not sure if this is the case, but Classic Industries has a chart of options to determine overall weight on the front of the car. You add up all the options (the assumption here is that each option adds additional weight I.E. power steering, RS option etc.) and then select a spring off the chart which coincides with the added weight.
I have often wondered if this is how GM did it back in the day. And as Dave pointed out, springs will vary as function of thickness, height and metalurgy.

Gary L Jul 19th, 08, 09:16 AM I used the Moog 6308s and had the original rears rearched (really just checked). A good spring shop has a book with the correct spring measurements. Don't let anyone tell you rearching (cold) is bad. They flat hold up.

All cross over to a 6308 in the Moog catalog.
Next higher coil is 6320 which would raise the car aprox 1" from the 6308.
6314 is very soft at 280#

othal Jul 22nd, 08, 06:41 PM I ordered Moog 6308 today. I hope this will be the last time I have to pull the coils and replace. Thanks for the info!
Kev68SS Jul 26th, 08, 09:37 PM I have a 68 SS 350. Someone told me my front end sits a little high due to having Chevelle coils?? Anyway, would the MOOG 6308 look good and or work on a 68 as well?
CamarosRus Jul 26th, 08, 10:01 PM I still need correct front spring for my 69 COPO clone Big Block with Turbo 400.........
