View Full Version : Just Detailed my 67!(pics inside)

So my 1967 Camaro was purchased in a very swirly condition. After purchase it had a new engine put in and a new exhaust system which further dirtied the car. I wish I had some before pics for you to see, the thing must have been swept with one of those auto brushes at those drive-in do-it-yourself car washes for at least 100 car washes...just uck. So I decided it was about time to man up and detail it. I only did the exterior and all the windows inside and out, besides that nothing was done on the inside as it didn't really need it and isn't my DD car. The paint is fairly old on the car, my guess is at least 5 years old from the looks of it. It wasn't faded and must have been garage kept, but whoever painted it did a less than perfect job. That, or the body panels were in less than perfect condition and just painted over regardless. Took me a good 9 hours to do this job and that did not include the wash/clay. I appologize for the lack of before pictures, my dad had the digital camera at his work when I told him I would need it:mad0260:. Also, in the pictures you will see a lot of haze. I realized my camera was below par and was also running out of time so I could not completely wipe doen sections for mere demonstration. The smudges are NOT haziness caused from buffing. I had to cut down on the amount of pictures as I am only allowed to post 10 in a single post :(.

Proof of those nasty ass swirls :(:

Passenger side of the trunk. Look at those nasty waterspots!

After the whole car(the next day as I actually finished around 11:30 the night before).

I don't understand how it's possible to have such a clean, neat garage.

Nice job on cleanin' her up  -- while it looks good in the garage, I bet it looks better driving down the road with you behind the wheel

Thanks for the comments guys. The feel of the paint is also 100x better. Feels silky and smooth as if you were touching a brand new car waxed for the showroom. If anyone needs their car detailed in South Florida, let me know and I can do it for you :).

Absolutely. I get so many stares, points, honks, thumbs up. It is really an eye catcher and definitely my favorite thing to do - drive it. It really is an obsession I already have $11000 in her right now with a good $10000 more to go at least. I am definitely working for this to be in tip-top shape.

The BMW is my daily driver. It is a twin-turbo inline six from the factory with a piggyback ECU upping boost, cold air intake, and stronger diverter valves to maintain higher boost. The BMW is close to 400 crank horsepower while the Camaro is somewhere above 500 crank horsepower. Two completely different cars. Traction of course is the biggest variation:cool:.

I would consider myself a professional detailer by now, have tried a boat load of products and finally refined what I use. For washing, I use Detailer's Pride Xtreme Foam Formula which I use with my foam gun that connects to my hose and auto-mixes the soap and water and sprays it on. I have tried all the soaps you can find at your local AutoZone or PepBoys and have also tried Zaino products. By far, the best is the DP soap as it gives it a deep shine and looks like the car was just polished from a simple wash and dry. I then dry the vehicle and put it in the middle of the garage and turn on the halogen floodlights so I can see all of the swirls. I use the Porter Cable 7424 to apply my polishes and waxes as it is powerful enough to get out 99.9% of swirls without fear of taking the paint off. Rotary buffers can take paint right off if not used properly so I stick with my trusty PC and it has not let me down. I use Menzerna Super Intensive Polish on an orange light cutting pad via Porter Cable to remove swirls. I buff the polish off with microfiber towels and then put on a white finishing pad to apply Menzerna Finishing Glaze to the whole car. I buff again with a microfiber towel and seal with Menzerna Sealing Wax APO via a black pad and wipe the residue off with another microfiber towel. To do metal/chrome/wheels I use Mother's Mag & Aluminum Polish via a Mother's Mini PowerBall hooked up to my drill. The stuff will absolutely work wonders on faded/dirty/lightly pitted metals. Dirty exhaust tips? It will take off all the grime and black and will make it harder for it to adhere again to the tips. I recommend Stoner's Invisible Glass for the windows as it completely evaporates and cleans to an absolutely streak-free shine that Windex or Cinch cannot even come close to.

nice e90, but the first gen is sexier.

who would win in a straight up 1/4 mile race?

Without drags on the Camaro the 335i would beat it in the 1/4. From a 35 - 45 mph roll it would be close with the Camaro probably pulling a car to a car and a half. I raced my friend's 2006 Mustang GT with the bmw and pulled it by about 1 - 1.5 cars by 100 - 110 from a roll. The camaro pulls that by about 70 - 80 mph;).

The 335i isn't the fastest car out there but it is probably one of the best DD cars with a little kick in its step. With my setup now I'm good for a 12.3 - 12.5 quarter depending on the 60 ft times.

I plan to race them this week and hopefully get it on video to find out which is faster.
