View Full Version : 68 Camaro, stretching rear wheel wells

I have installed the Chassisworks back half and I am at the point where I need to section and stretch the rear wheel wells. I am running 31x18 Mickeys.

The question: Because the wheel well opening is round and has somewhat a unique shape to it, whatever I use as a donor in the middle of the quarter panel, will also have the same contour of the original wheel well. What are people doing to make it a straight 1 1/2 - 2 inch section added in the center. Are they just massaging the piece to make it straight?

I hope this question is clear enough. I have looked all over the web and found a few pictures here and there but nothing goes into too much detail, especially on the 68 Camaro. I have articles on sectioning Nova quarters and basically on all the easier quarters that have flat sections
but nothing on the 68/67 Camaro.

In the end it should go from a round wheel well lip to having a short flat section in the middle.

First post, see how it goes.

Thanks, Trent

67-68 are round as you said so you cant ad a section at the top or it will change the contour.

What you need to do is make a cut with an air body saw about 2 to 3 inches in from the lip just past the contour all the way around but leaving a small section attached at the top.

Then cut a series of reliefs in the lip. Then slowly hammer the the wheel opening out retaining a nice round contour. Remove metal from the quarter as needed so the lip will move back.

Use a flanging tool to flange the quarter before tacking the lip back in place.

When you get it where you want it slowly weld up the gaps.

Hope this makes sense, hard to explain.

Here is a pic of the finished wheel opening. Sorry I couldn't find a closer pic.

I stretch the quarters on my 67 pro-street car. I have 33X19.50 under the car and have plenty of room now. I added a 4" section in the top of the wheel opening which I hand formed to match the contours of the quarter. I dont have any special tools vise, hammer, dollies and such. It'll need a skim coat of filler, but even that will be at a minimum. I'll look to see if I can find some pics.

My process was similiar in that I had bought 80% quarters, cut them at the top center and hand made the 4" stretch section. It ends up with a small flat section at the top of the opening kinda like a 69 instead of round all the way around.

Brian,

I like they way yours turned out. I stretched mine 5" on my 69 like David said with the 2 patch panels. Harwood also makes a fiberglass opening for the 67/68. It looks good when you finish all the body work but it will not be steel.
