My Son and I recently came across a 68 camaro, it says it is a real ss camaro, but we have no access to either the motor or any thing like that.
We would greatly appreciate it if one of you could kindly run the vin to determine if it truly is an SS

Vin# 124378L320337

Please let us know asap as the car is only available until tommorow night
Thank You

The VIN does not tell us too much....The car would need the original drive train or real documentation to confirm wether or not It's a real SS....

VIN Decode:

1 = Chevrolet
2 = Camaro
4 = 8-cylinder engine
37 = coupe body
8 = 1968 model year
L = Los Angeles, CA assembly plant (Van Nuys)

The remaining numbers are only the sequential body numbers...No help to ID the car!

would their be any certain details to determine if the car is a true SS such as the gauges, driveline, motor, etc. Because I will be hopefully inspecting the car tommorow

There are things to look for....but if the car does not have it's original drive train or the documentation.....then simply think of it as a Plain Jane....as many of the items could have been added to the car......68's are the hardest of the first gens to ID....

Finding the engine code & partial VIN stamped on the block would be a place to start....does the seller have the protecto-plate or window sticker?

Here is some good reading on ID'ing a 68

Lets assume that this car is a non original SS, the prior owner added a new motor that possibly may not run, after market non original chrome rims , needs paint, and possibly interior, what would the bottom line price to pay?

There are a lot of variables.....mainly how much rust, how much bondo and how many parts are missing?

We would really need to see some detailed pics to give an accurate estimate...otherwise it's simply a WAG.....which could be anywhere from $1k to $10k

Actually, 68's are the hardest to fake. 67's and 69's easily fool the inexperienced buyer with a simple $200 trim tag.
Due diligence is required for any Camaro purchase.
If you don't know what you are buying, then "plain jane" or "sum of the parts" prices are what you need to pay.

Looks like and impound lot, did you repo the car?
Looks like a 10K car from here, but thats just a WAG.

That car looks just like one I owned in the early 90's don't remember the vin but it used to have a vinyl top but I got rid of it due to rust.Is this car located in Northern Ca. I sold it to someone who lived in Santa Rosa.I'm sure it's not it but if it is it wasn't a SS

Actually it's easier as they are able to fool the buyer without having to spend the $200 on a fake trim tag!

From that pic it looks like an $8k to $10k car....

Was the person you sold it to in Santa Rosa named Scott by chance? I bought my 68 in Santa Rosa last year.

Thanks for answering. I am still trying to determine if mine is a 'real' RS/SS. The guy I bought form swore that it was(of course). And all the signs that I know of point to that but still not 100% sure is all.

Thank You guys for all your help, the car ended up being sold for 14,000 with a blown 396, and indeed was not a real SS, Thank you all very much and wish you all the best of luck,

Wow, thats sounds like all the money for that car.
Was it an impound or repo auction? (your name is repoman77!)

A Repo Auction, it only had a blown head gasket, but the paint, interior, and body were just perfect
