View Full Version : 1st time slip!! need tips!!
69Huggrrr Sep 5th, 03, 05:25 PM Hey all,
I recently took my 69 to Milan Dragway in MI. during camaro superfest for first time ever! now I think I'm hooked. My combo is a 350 .030, 2.02 camel hump heads, 600 holley dbl pumper, proform hei distributor, lumpy cam(don't know exact specs), headers, flowmasters, 4.56, traction bars, homemade sfc., m20, comp plus shifter, street radials. My times are listed below, keep in mind I really wasn't planning on running that day. The car was loaded(long trip) with luggage, baby seats, coolers, spare & tools in trunk! Anyway I smoked a newer rustang!! yeah! What can I do to improve?? lower tire psi? launch rpm??? Any help is welcome!
1.121 react.
2.147 60
5.883 330
8.986 1/8
79.49 mph
11.624 1000
13.829 1/4
102.46 mph
I could only go 1 round cause I needed a helmet to continue!!
Sorry about the long post but I am excited!!
fast Sep 5th, 03, 05:46 PM low mph for those gears, I'm betting they don't match your powerband very well
the sixty is very important, so I'd say more tire, if you're not up for drag oriented tires then definitely lower the psi in your street runners
above all DO NOT do a burnout w/ street tires
drive around the waterbox
and turn em over a couple times to clean the rocks off
all that extra weight hurts . . . a bunch!
remember the old 100lbs = .1 sec, it's sorta true
what was your launch technique?
what were your shift points and any idea what rpm crossing finish?
above all else, did you enjoy it?
best of luck

69Huggrrr Sep 5th, 03, 06:11 PM Oh yeah I had a blast! I did not do a burnout, just turned the tires a bit. Next time I will not drive through the water. How much psi is safe? What do you mean 4.56 does not match powerband? As far as shift rpm I have know idea, I was just hangin on & letting the sound of the engine tell me when to shift(5000 maybe)

What's up with these double posts, sorry
Eric68 Sep 6th, 03, 04:04 AM Hey 69hggrrr, I was there that night at Milan! Did I meet you? I was in the red 68 Camaro with SS stripe --- I lost in the finals to that green 8 second Mopar . . . The weather was weird that night, strong crosswind --- I'm suprised they didn't cut us off at the 1/8th mile, my last run was a bit scary.
Anyway, I see two things that should really help you a lot.
1st: you need to get that power to the ground - looks like maybe you're spinning the tires a lot during the first 60'. A set of drag radials or ET streets would help a lot with your times, maybe enough to get a low 13 second or possibly even high 12 second run. IMO usually 102 MPH is barely enough speed to get you into the 12.999's if everything comes together perfectly . . .
2nd: just practice on your reaction times. Leave when the third amber light comes on. A perfect reaction time is .500 seconds. At Milan I found that there is a lot of rollout in the pre-staged light - in other words you can creep forward a lot before the pre-staged light goes out. Inch up there a little - the farther you creep forward the lower your reaction times will be. You can even deep stage which means you creep forward until the prestaged light goes out. You just have to experiment until you get consistent reaction times --- times in the .5xx range are needed to be competitive.
Have fun!
69Huggrrr Sep 6th, 03, 04:37 AM Eric,
I don't recall meeting you there. Anyway were you with the superfest or on your own? I was only there for maybe an hour during test & tune. I was driving the 69 hugger orange with white stripes and orange houndstooth interior. So what would be a good psi for radials(for now)? Any ballpark # for launch rpm?
see ya!

Eric68 Sep 6th, 03, 07:06 AM I was there for the Superfest - I live on the other side of the state. if you were there for an hour I probably didn't run into you at milan. Spent most of my time in the staging lanes waiting to run  I did see a hugger orange Camaro or two during the trip but I don't recall whether it was at Milan . . or MIS . . . or at WCC . . . maybe I'll see you next year.
I just had an experience running my BFG radials at the track and found that with my automatic I could just feather it out of the hole - then at about the 5 or 10 foot mark I gradually lay into the gas to keep the tires from breaking loose. If I were driving a stick I would try to find the lowest RPM I could launch at without bogging and go higher from there until the tires almost break loose. As for pressure --- I ran 24psi in my 225-60R15 BFG radials. I wouldn't go much lower than that.
Matt R Sep 8th, 03, 06:19 AM 69Huggrrr,
If you want more practice I rented Milan dragway this Thurday night (Sept 11th) from 6PM to 9PM. The cost is $30 for the car running. Spectators are free. I run the racing division for Eastern Michigan Camaro Club (We put on the Camaro Superfest with the Western Michigan Camaro Club). You are more than welcome to come out and run the car or just hang out and BS with other Camaro junkies. Shoot me an email if you need more info.
Eric68, You need to more closer to this side of the state.

Matt R Sep 9th, 03, 01:54 AM Dean,
I remember your car from Superfest and Milan. Very nice, I always liked Hugger Orange. Look forward to seeing you again next year. I am planning on making the Ontario show next year. With 5 month old twins this year is was to crazy at my house.
