View Full Version : Striped to our 68 Vert
Daytona Yellow 69 Z/28 Jul 23rd, 08, 04:08 PM Ok, you know what they say about the devil and idle hands right?? ;) I had a couple of free hours this afternoon and instead of working on the 68 RS like I should be, I desided the new Vert needed a stripe to break up all that White. I had some really old PPG Black basicly just enough for a stripe so......

What do you all think? yea or nea?? I figure I need to paint anyway, so why not untill I can get to it. :)
Eric Kammerer Jul 23rd, 08, 04:54 PM I like it, and it certainly looks great for a "quickie" job! The car is a clone to my first love, which was a 68 white vert that used to sit in a special curtained off area of the body shop I worked in as a teen. Loved that car, except it gave me this darn Camaro fever...
speedfreek Jul 23rd, 08, 05:00 PM Yep I like the stripe much better than the plain look.
alanrw Jul 23rd, 08, 05:30 PM A couple of hours? It takes me that long just to wash it, dry it and apply the tape. You are my hero!!!!
It really gives the car the "pop" it deserves.

Gary L Jul 23rd, 08, 06:50 PM You were right. Looks good!
Daytona Yellow 69 Z/28 Jul 23rd, 08, 08:41 PM Thanks guys. That is my $6.00 stripe. I had the 1/8" fine line tape and the old paint laying around. The only thing I needed was a scotch pad and a tack rag. But, you know how it is that once you get started it is hard to stop. :D Lets see, I have a spare ZL-2 hood that I used to run on my SS/RS, & I have about 2/3's of a quart of Dover White from a project years ago, so.... Hmmm maybe another free afternoon and.....;)
68vert Jul 24th, 08, 06:53 AM Love the stripe and color choice. Looks much better IMHO. Brian

DDOLES Jul 24th, 08, 05:58 PM Great stripe! what kind measurements did you use or did you free hand it? I want to put that very same stripe on mine but this is my first 1st gen camaro build and don't know what the measurments are. I am an experienced painter and could free hand it but you guys know better than I what the stripe should look like

Thanks. Honestly it was just a 5 or 10 min quicky tape job. I used the 1/8 fine line tape and started in the middle of the header panel about an inch up for the first line. When I taped it I had not yet removed the emblems and I brought it down the side of the fenders just outside of the 327 emblems. Then I just ran another piece of tape about an 1/8 on an inch just the the out side of it and masked the car from the outside line. And basicly did the same thing on the top lines except I started at the other side of the 327 emblem. When running the tape accross the header panel I just kept the tape pararell(sp) with the ends of the header panel so it looked strait.
They sell a stencil kits which are pretty reasonable but we were not sure what stripe we wanted. I personally wanted to put the D90 like my SS/RS has, but my wife thought she wanted a Bumble stripe. I went out there and taped the bumble be real quick so she could get an idea what it would look like on the car. Whe she saw it taped she said she liked it, so I just pulled the front bumper, the emblems, ran some masking tape around it and coved the car with a car diaper( big plasic cover) scuffed it with a scotch pad and shot it.
On the lines that were towards the rear of the car I stoped the tape at the front bumper brakets and the front lines I brought around to where the lower valance bolts on.
I have no idea how correct it is. I have seen so many pictures of this stripe and it seems everyone is a little differant. When I taped it I fully expected to just rip it back of and do a D90 but she really liked it so I just left it as it was.
Sorry for the long winded reply, but I hope it helps.
:beers:
DDOLES Jul 25th, 08, 02:22 PM Thanks Nick that sounds close enough for me
Daytona Yellow 69 Z/28 Jul 27th, 08, 07:25 PM I couldn't stand it, so I shot the extra ZL-2 hood I had laying around the other morning with some old White paint I had left from a previous project. The color is not an exact match but it is close enough till I can redo the whole car.
