View Full Version : Building a 327
Bill Bergen Nov 19th, 00, 08:36 AM I am in the process of building a 327 for my 67 RS ragtop. I would like to be sure that the enging is happy reving to 6,000 RPM or so. I will be installing Edelbrock RPM Performer heads and will likely be going with the rest of the Edelbrock RPM Performer package. (Cam, Intake ) Maybe a Holley carb. I'm shooting for about 350 HP with a strong lower mid range torgue to be fun to drive. I will balance the engine. Will have a 4 speed.
In addition to any input on the above, I would like to get some advice on the following:
-best harmonic balancer to put on the engine
-good choice for flat top pistons (Cast, forged aluminum or other material
BTW, my crankshaft looks forged steel, has a GM mark on it but does not have the part number in the usual place, in fact I can only find a number (4577) on the first crank throw. Anyone have an idea what I have here?
Thanks
pdq67 Nov 19th, 00, 08:58 AM You might find that the RPM cam is a schosh big for the 327! It's a great cam for a slightly bigger engine, though.
Try something in the 220ish (216/224)range. There is a pot full of posts on this so do a search. Good luck. pdq67
mutant 68 Nov 19th, 00, 10:37 AM In the early 80's Racer Brown listed 327 cams as readily as everyone lists 350's today. They listed a cam verry close to Comp Cams 268 HE 218 268 454 110 as being for a 327w/TH-350 with an aftermarket stall OR 350w/auto trans and stock converter. They listed a cam close to the 270 Magnum 225 270 470 110 as 327 W/4 SPD and low gears.I can only imagine how they would have listed a cam like the 235/245 duration Performer RPM cam in a 327.
The 225 at .050 cam should get you 350HP when set up with good components and 10:1 compression. After all a 350HP/327 cams speck's were 222.050 duration 280ADV duration 447Lift 114LSA.I think the 350HP/327 had 11:1 compression, but the increased performance of the newer cam, intake and headers should make up for that.
Make shure you have your block decked,it's WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!
Get a Performer RPM,Weiand Stealth PT# 300-70,or the Holley PT# 300-36.
Some people will tell you that a 600 CFM vacuum secondary carb is plenty. You should consider it only barley enough.Yes I know the 350HP/327 only came with a 585 CFM vacume secondary carb.Personaly,I would go with a Holley 650DP or the 750vs 3310 because the dual plane manifold tends to be restrictive and doesn't allow the motor to see all of the CFM.
Don't take my word for it,read what David Vizard had to say about carb sizing and dual plane intakes at http://www.davidvizard.com/art1d.htm
Performer RPM heads are good. You might also consider a set of Vortec's,or pocket ported World Products S/R Torquer heads with 202/160 valves and 67cc combustion chambers.
You'll also need a set of 1&5/8 inch headers.
As for pistons,it depends on how much $$$ you want to spend. For a really nice forged piston look at companies like JE,ARIAS,Callies,Wiseco, and ROSS.If you want a lower cost forged, try the Federal Mogul Lightweight forged series.
You might check into Lunati, they might list a rebuild kit for that motor that comes with a quality piston(and your choice of cams) that will save you some $$$.
If you are thinking of runing Hypereutectics, look no further then the Keith Black Signature Series.Be advised Hypereutectic pistons call for a larger ring gap than normal, something like twice as much.

bravewink Nov 19th, 00, 11:01 AM The 4577 is a forged steel 327 crank. As far as twisting a 327 to 6000 RPM, you're on the right track with a good set of heads and balancing. A cam somewhere around 218 to 224 @ .050 built on a 110 LSA will be plenty to get you to 6000 and still provide LOTS of midrange torque with a 327. The Performer RPM cam will probably take too much bottom end away. Good Luck and keep us updated.
b-boy Nov 19th, 00, 11:45 AM Concerning Racer Brown, Inc. Their address is: 8001 Philadelphia Road, Baltimore, MD 21237. Phone#: (410)-866-7660. I haven't used a Racer Brown cam in years, so have not had any direct contact with them, but their business name and phone # still show up in the Baltimore Yellow Pages, so I assume they are still in business.
mutant 68 Nov 19th, 00, 12:10 PM b-boy...Thanks,I found it on a serch also.
pdq67 Nov 19th, 00, 06:45 PM Mutant,
Thanks for turning me on to Visards stuff. I know he's good.
As for a 327 and rpm, one with stock forged 350/365/375hp pistons is good for at least 7200+. I know pdq67
80 350/425 Nov 20th, 00, 08:36 AM I have the RPM cam, intake and world sportsman II heads.Run forged 9.5:1 pistons. As far as low range power it's awesome.Use a holley 650 double pumper Ive found out it works best with the setup. My crank is forged steel .10 under.I also have roller rockers, pete jackson gear drive,3000 stall, and 3.42 gears-and let me tell you,This thing really hauls A**!
