View Full Version : Full rockers and Floors replacement
6781camaro Jul 26th, 08, 07:27 AM Any tips on which order I should replace the full floors and full rockers in my '69 Camaro coupe? One side at a time? Body cart? Etc... Need all the tips I can get. *** I currently have both full rear quarters and trunk gutters removed at this time. I will also be replacing the inner quarter panel walls where the rear regulators mount to. I just am a little confused at which order to replace these in.
THanks

Goodluck!
I'd do rockers first by the way. Just brace the door frame diagonally and you'll be just fine.
LS 1st Gen Aug 8th, 08, 09:09 PM Quick question, where are you getting your inner quarters? Are you using the complete door frame/ inner quarter, rocker assembly?
6781camaro Aug 9th, 08, 06:33 AM I found them on ebay for $74.99 each side. They look great and are Goodmarks.
I will try to look up the username and let you know who it was.

6781camaro Aug 9th, 08, 06:36 AM Gordon,
His username was midnightoilgarage. His name is James Timms in Georgia. His email address is: timms_k@bellsouth.net Let him know that I sent you and he will take care of you. My name is Todd in Spring Hill, FL. He should know me.
The part numbers of the inner quarters are:
956 RH and 957 LH
Hope this helps.
LS 1st Gen Aug 9th, 08, 01:06 PM Thanks for the quick update Todd. I definitly need the drivers side and I'm deciding on the passenger side.
Just to confirm, is this the part youre talking about?

Yes. Those are the pieces I bought. I need both sides so I bought the pair. They were less money and the same parts through James Timms in Georgia though. Heartbeatcity is pricey on some things and good on others.
Arai Aug 9th, 08, 10:15 PM sweet......I need those pieces and did not know they existed. I was just about to start modifying my rusted ones tomorrow......glad I waited. I will be ordering a pair this week. Has anyone actually installed these yet?

Todd, at this point, it'd be a good idea to first do one rocker at a time. If you can affix the empty door shells to it during this process, all the better. This helps you set the lower gap between the door and rocker(s). Once the rockers are nailed in, the floor should be next. By following this sequence, the car will have adequate support during the build. Then you'd move on to quarters and the rest of the rear clip.
Arai Aug 9th, 08, 10:49 PM Todd, If you look on my page, I am replacing the lower front door jambs, and now I guess the rear quarter patch, then the rockers. After that I am attaching the shell to the 1 piece floor. From there I plan on doing the firewall, dash, hatshelf and then quarters and roof.

THanks. I will take a look. Just a little scared to remove rockers. I need to make a body cart or some sort of support for the shell. I have it up on 4 jack stands currently and own a rotisserie, but not a body cart. I will read and then do. Safer the better, I can see. --thanks

Bob,
Thanks for the tips. I will do some more reading (posts) before I make that first cut. I see that you can never be too safely prepared.

Chriss,
WOW! I had no idea how far you have taken your Camaro down to. That is incredible-- and truly impressive work. My shell is not nearly that far gone to justify that much tear down, but I do need a nice long list of sheet metal panels to be replaced too.
Here it is:
Rear inner and outer tail panels, full rear quarters, full trunk floor, drop offs, rear outer wheel houses, rear filler panel (between trunk lid and rear glass), inner rear quarter panel walls, left and right full floor pans, outer rockers(but I bought the full ones instead), front edge of the upper dash panel, lower tulip panels on firewall(two small spots), and finally .... the pass side front floor extension panel (under the ac inner box). Yes, another long list, but I am determined to make this car like new again. It was from Connecticut, so the salt and snow took it's toll. (not to mention it had a vinyl top.
THanks for the pics and posts. It's a huge help to everyone.

Chris,
Looks like this simple wooden body cart is the way to go for me. I like the price and it I am sure it is sturdy. How did it work out for you? Do you have the dimensions?
thanks.

I made that from some old 2x6's I had lying in the backyard the night before my car was delivered. I used it through the entire tear down process and during the inner metal framing process. I want to say it was about 6ft long and wide enough to where it sat on the rockers with the lip of the rocker on the outside of each board. This allowed it to not slide side to side. Then I strapped it down with motorcycle tie downs so it couldn't move forwards/backwards while pushing it in/out of my garage. It worked great for my tear down process, but I can not see it being effective while trying to replace the rockers. All the weight is resting on the rockers, and once you eliminate 1 of them, all the weight load will be bearing on the other side. I recommend bracing the inside with square tubing, then you could use some horizontal beams from the support metal to the box to hold it off the box while you replaced the rockers. If you look in my pictures, I made a support system inside and then attached it to some legs and wheels. This made it easy to roll around and get to the blaster. As soon as I attach the rockers I will be cutting those legs off and using an outer bar to hold the shell in the proper position on top of the floor for proper fitment. take a look at cheby2's posts as well.......He has A LOT of GREAT TIPS there.
6781camaro Sep 20th, 08, 07:13 AM If I have my Camaro up on four jackstands, would it hurt to cut out the outer floorboards so I can get to the full rockers? Should I start that way? or wait to build a body cart and then start cutting?
I know to do one side at a time, but just unsure how to start.
Thanks
