View Full Version : replace trim tag?
orange67vert Jul 27th, 08, 10:52 AM Well here's how the story goes. recently painted and filled fire wall on my 67 vert 6 cyclnder not SS car. sprayed paint remover on tag and set it down? came back and hole were eaten through it. After joining the site have read about not to removing tag but damage is done. Can this be replaced??? Not trying to make this a SS. If it was a true SS id went totally stock and #matching.
orange67vert Jul 28th, 08, 07:50 AM any thoughts on this or am i just screwed?
myyenco Jul 28th, 08, 08:10 AM Well, since we're not talking about a car that could easily be mistaken for a HiPo model being it has a 6 cyl vin. I say go ahead and get a replacement with the same markings and keep the original tag to go with the car. I don't think it will be scrutinized like a big block car would, and with the original tag to go with it, your just doing it to make the firewall look nicer. Accidents do happen, the heartburn we get over replacement tags is primarily that they are used for fraudulent purposes.
I think you would only have an issue if you had a tag made that didn't match what your car was.
Others may have a different opinion.
rafbody Jul 28th, 08, 08:37 AM Everyone looks at it different and even though you are not trying to misrepresent your car, you would still be supporting the guys making the repro tags.

Just curious...are you saying that there is no need for a Repro tag manufacturer at all?
I hate the fake tags more than anything but I realize that there are instances whan a legitimate person needs a replacement tag....but I also believe they should have to be able to prove their tag......not just any joe blow getting any tag that they desire....Customers should be required to send in their damaged tag and a copy of the title (in their name) to be able to order one.
This guy is a perfect example of a legitimate customer who is in need of one and should be able to order one.
The way I see it....is if this guy does not replace it with an exact duplicate and leaves that area of the firewall blank...it will just make it that much easier for the next owner to add whatever tag he wants...
With that said....I do also believe that the repro trim tags should be required to have an identifying mark on them...even a subtle ID number or a "TT" stamped in the corner!

As nice as the car looks, and as much as it has changed from stock, I personally wouldn't even bother. I assume when you smoothed the firewall you just filled in the TT rivet holes?
If my former 6 cyl, now BB vert didn't have a trim tag, I couldn't care less. As it is, it shows an Oct 68 built car with a standard black interior, Dover White, and a black top. Yawn...
DjD Jul 28th, 08, 10:10 AM My personal thoughts are that there is no need for a reproduction cowl tag at all. If one is lost or damaged so be it, it isn't the end of the world. Even for the '67 year where the tag can document what a car is, if that is all the documentation you have and a repro tag is used and identified as a repro the car will be called to question. As well now the owner's motives also get called to question. Once a cowl tag is replaced even on a legit car for legit reasons it's a downward path, think about it - 2 identical cars, one with a repro tag which do you want? The answers obvious so somewhere someone is going to try to pass the repro tag off as real even if just to help market the car. Next you just find out the car has a repro tag, you are just starting a restoration, why not replace the tag again and make it an SS and make an extra buck or two later when you sell it? If you don't the next guy will...
It just goes on and on, I also know if there were no repro tags guys would start loosing tags to build that SS, and say something like "the body shop lost it when preping the car but it's real" so it's kinda the same with or without them but the hobby just doesn't need them.

67speedfreak Jul 29th, 08, 07:09 AM I'm in the same boat.
I am restoring a 68 vert and it is an ex race car. Some one drilled two holes in the trim tag to mount something to the fire wall.
This is a real ss car.

The cowl tag doesn't tell you anything as far as the ss option is concerned on a 68 car so in my opinion there is no need to be concerned in your case.
