View Full Version : Another cam question..........
EA73Z Apr 15th, 03, 03:27 PM I am building a 355 that I hope to get 475-500hp out of, low 11's on motor and spray into the 9's, here's my combo:
AFR 195cc milled to 64cc CNC race port 2.05/1.65 max lift.620
11.5:1 compression
Edel. Super Victor
Nos big shot--dual stage
1.6 Comp alum. roller rockers
850 Mighty Demon
Jerico 4-spd
Dana 60...3:73 gears....spool
This will proably go into my '73 z/28(3460w/driver). Streetability is not that much of a concern, will mostly drive it on the weekends to the track and to the local hang-out.
I'm trying to decide between the Comp 294s or the 305s..how much difference in performance is there .......
CamaroNOTcamero Apr 15th, 03, 06:15 PM "spool"
YOu're putting one of these in your "street" car, but i'm the idiot. LOL we'll see!
Toby Keen Apr 16th, 03, 12:41 AM Assuming the bottom is built to take it, I'd probably look at a solid roller. Check with the various companies to see what they recommend.
PDQUICK Apr 16th, 03, 03:00 AM Your gonna run an 11.5:1 engine with a 3500RPM minimum manifold on the street with only a 3.73:1 rear gear??
The last one of these "ultimate street" combos I built needed a ridiculously large cam (Crane CC300NC Solid, .539,.561 300,310) and a 4.56 gear just to make it livable on the Sunoco 260 pump gas that hasn't been around for over 20 years now!! graemlins/clonk.gif
Just my $.02, but I might back off on this combo a little bit!
Novaguy73 Apr 16th, 03, 10:54 AM Well Ea73Z im trying to do the exact same thing in a very similar car {3250lb nova, same chassis and all} anyways.... A good solid cam should do it from what ive gathered. But its gonna have to be big, real fricken big. Way bigger than most guys on here want to run. Look at howard, they have a 302/310, 268/278 @.050 with lift in the 560-570 range {i forget the lift smile.gif }on a 108l/s Its gonna be a cam like that. Your rear gears are also going to have to go much lower probably. Im running a 4.11 with a 3.28 first gear 5 speed. If the AFR's have a good enough intake/exaust ratio Isky has a symetrical Z70 cam i may get also 304/304, 264/264 @.050, .548 lift. But the problem with these cams is that nitrous isnt going to run well on them because of the 108 l/s. Herbert has a 310/320, 260/270@.050, .510/.535 lift {wich would work great with your 1.6 rockers}, on a 112 that may work good. Now about the mighty Demon...if you havent gotten it already get the 750. My neighbor runs an 850 MD and he wishes he got the 750 MD. The 850 is actually WAY bigger than 850. He runs an Erson 312, 268@.050, .575 lift, 108 cam {wich i would also recommend without 1.6 rockers} through Track 1 heads, and a super victor and he said 750 Mighty Demon is the way to go. But your going to need alot of Advertised duration to make this pump gas friendly so get ready for a wicked idle. These cams may work on nitrous, im not sure though because i thought you need more like a 112 or so l/s to get the benifit of nitrous {ive never dealt with it} But remember one thing....theres more to cams than "comp" broaden your horizons and youll find the right grind.
Eric68 Apr 16th, 03, 11:19 AM With 3.73 gears IMO you need to make your power in the mid-rpm range (like 3500-6800) not 7,000 plus so forget the huge cam idea. You will also need a lot of stall, like 4000-4500 IMO.
I would look at a race only solid roller setup, like this Ultradyne: 287/295 advertised duration, 254/262 @ 050, .582 lift, 108* LSA. You will need to run race fuel with this setup. You might talk to Harold @ Ultradyne (if you can get him on the phone) for his recommendation.
You have a long way to go with this combo IMO. I agree the 850 race Demon is too big. If you bought a Holley I'd say get the 830 annular, but stay a little smaller with the Demon. IMO Holley carb sizes tend to be overstated where Demons tend to be understated.
EA73Z Apr 16th, 03, 11:52 AM CNC....when your 67 gold turd, powered by that all so impressive BSE combo you swing on, makes enough power to break that go kart axle you have, then you'll understand.
Like I said before, my tired 434ci would spank your turd Monday thru Saturday and twice on Sunday, SO YES YOU ARE AN IDIOT!!!
I had a '70 that went low 10's all day long w/3:73 gears and a bottle, so I'm not to concerned about that, and who said I was runnin' pump gas, besides my question was about cams....I guess I'll go with Comp Cams recomendation.(nitrous HP)
Thanks anyway for the bias opinion novaguy73.
Maybe somebody with some real world experience will join this site, and give some informative advice, instead of reading magazine articles and conveying the info.

Novaguy73 Apr 16th, 03, 12:20 PM Well Ea73Z if you dont want my opinions just say it, Im trying to decipher if that was a rude remark to me or to somone else but believe it or not i do have "real world expierence" Not necessarily through my own car but through several friends cars that i deal with on a daily basis, its just that finally i have the $$$$$ to build my own. Now if there is one guy on here that isnt spitting out magazine articles its me.
Thats when the "real world expierence" kicks in.
DjD Apr 16th, 03, 12:41 PM Damn! a couple of you are really turning this place into a day care center!! I hope you all are potty trained or I'm shipping you back to your parents...
roll out the mats I thinks it's nap time, graemlins/boring.gif if everyone is good we'll have cookies and milk after we wake up and put our mats away... graemlins/clonk.gif
