: Best adjustable vacuum can?
marx3 Jul 30th, 08, 08:33 AM I have experienced several times, that Crane's adjustable vacuum can, dont function properly. Sometimes the rate cant be turned down enough, like there is only maybe 10 degrees to adjust with.
Can anyone recommend a better brand of cans, before I buy a hole bunch of them?
mbrekke Jul 30th, 08, 09:05 AM I've had two different Accel vacuum cans and neither one worked right. The first one was non-adjustable right out of the package. The second one lost the adjustment screw inside or something because I tried to put another turn into it the other day and there was nothing to turn. So, I'm 0 for 2 with the adjustable cans so far.

marx3 Jul 30th, 08, 09:10 AM What the heck is it with the makers of these things!
I have adjusted a lot of cans lately, and some other brand seems to work, just cant remember it...
Crane burned me 3 or 4 times...
The Devil's advocate Jul 30th, 08, 09:44 AM Crane, hands down, BUT, you MUST modify the stop plate mounting positioning per Dave Ray's (IgnitionMan) instructions. His modification stops the problem you describe above. His modification changes the positioning of the stop plate, and separates the rate adjustment of the diaphragm, from the total number of degrees setting.
You have nothing to lose, and, complete adjustability will be the gain. E-mail Dave and ask for the "Crane adjustable vacuum advance stop modification page".
His e-mail address is sparkman451@earthlink.net

marx3 Jul 30th, 08, 10:18 AM the thing is I have seen Crane's that worked like they should, with full adjustabillity, also... I could easily force a new stop by welding a little, but I can't do that at all times. I want a can that i can trust is working properly evertime I install one, when adjusting peoples engines.
The Devil's advocate Jul 30th, 08, 04:20 PM You have your answer, if you choose not to use it, then the problem will remain being you, and not the Crane advance. Dave's modification method works, and corrects the Crane issues. He uses the Crane advances exclusively. He doesn't seem to have problems getting them dialed in, neither do many others on this, and other boards, you shouldn't either.

chassisboy Jul 30th, 08, 05:26 PM Found this at novas.net. Its Dave's article on vac adv mods. Just thought i'd post it so his mail doesn't get hammered.

marx3 Jul 31st, 08, 01:50 AM Listen... I know my way around an adjustable vacuum can, I know how to modify it physically. And when i buy an adjustable vacuum can, I don't want it to not function properly half the times I install them.
So if anyone can recommend another brand of cans, i would like to hear from them. ( which kinda was my question to begin with...:) )
The Devil's advocate Jul 31st, 08, 09:32 AM Good, then you don't need help with them. You were given a resource, by more than just me, and you still choose not to use it. Of course, it is still your choice, but, you asked for help, we gave you a person that has over 20 years of working with the Crane and other adjustable vacuum advances.
You seem to only want to just complain about the Crane advances, and tell us you are the expert on them, and that is still your choice.
It would seem others that have had problems here have responded to you, and have given all the help they can/will.
So, please don't bite the messengers when they give you resources to explore and answers you asked for.
From my hands-on experiences, the other vacuum advances do not run down to the 4.0 in/hg the Crane will function at, WHEN the Dave mods are done. The method Crane shows for the stop plate exponentially raises the RATE of vacuum pull with every degree removed from the advance, and that completely answers your question about losing rate adjustability at lower vacuum pull levels, as degrees are reduced with the Crane stop plate method. THE EXACT SAME OCCURENCE HAPPENS WHEN A STOP PLATE IS INSTALLED ON ANY OTHER ADJUSTABLE VACUUM ADVANCE, FROM THE REAR MOUNTING BOLT INSTEAD OF IN THE PULL PATH OF THE PULL PIN.
It cannot be made simpler than that.

chassisboy Jul 31st, 08, 11:05 AM BTW allied Signal makes the cans for most of the aftermarket. We bought them when I worked at Moroso.
marx3 Jul 31st, 08, 02:39 PM Devils advocate: you sound like I rejected and offended a lot of people in here... I just want to know if anyone has had succes with another brand of cans...
The Devil's advocate Jul 31st, 08, 07:29 PM Oh, please post YOUR results on the other brands, we are all waiting for that info, which should give you an idea as to just who uses what, and it doesn't appear to be anything but Crane.

Milton
