So i find a good high nickle block for a real good price here a few months back and buy it. Take it to "The best machine shop around here" And have them Magnaflux it and check and see how much i need to clean up my bores. I get the block back its crack free and "it only needs .030" Ok thanks man. I didnt have the money to do the work right then and i needed some more parts so i took my block and go home. Well i finally got all my stuff together and took it to another machine shop 30 miles away because the guy at machine shop #1 was a jerk and acted like they didnt want my work. So i get a call last night
Ring Ring Ring.....
Hello
Machone Shop: Yeah this is Bob, yeah your bores didnt clean up at .030 so you need different pistons and rings. {NOTE: Pistons cant be returned}

ME: Well will it clean up at .040?

Machine shop: Its gonna be close, it may not

ME: Mother $%(*@# im gonna smack that stupid son of a $%$#@ {of course im cursing the other machine shop} .......i dont want it going .060 cause they tend to heat up.

Machine shop: Well weve already decked it so you ant us to take it .040 and see?

ME: May as well since i have to pay for it anyways. Call me back and let me know.

2 hours pass

Ring Ri HELLO

Machine shop: Yeah this is Bob, .040 took care of it.
Me: Whew that just saved me alot of work and money

At this point i could breathe alot easier but i still had 600 bucks worth of Pistons and Rings that are of no good use to me....and then i remembered, My good buddy Jim was having a motor machined and needed .030 pistons so i called him and sold him them minus tax and shipping. Gosh its good to have older friends with money to burn. Sorry i had to vent, last night i was on the verge of calling up the moron at the machine shop and going to his house and kicking his ass. I dont know how you could be off that bad unless he didnt even check it. Wich i doubt he did. Just goes to show that sometimes the best arent the best to go to i guess.

If you want to get it done right, call Jay Roeder in Waverly. Or, if you want to take a longer drive, call Jeff Stealy in East Moline. Jeff has been around SBC stuff long enough to know what he is doing. I have had him do block work for me. Jay I have known for a long time as well, he actually was the one who painted the Mustang II I raced, and has been doing machine work for some time now. Jay is a die-had Ford man, but still can do your block work. And, if you had been unable to sell the pistons, a different block and machine work would still have been less than $600...... smile.gif

Sorry to hear that!! I don't deal with shops that act like a d#ck. If you are in no hurry, I would find another machine shop. I know that you are aways from Des Moines, but there is a guy at Arnold's Motor Supply in Ankeny named George. He has been building and machining for over 20 years. He is very kind and to the point. He will tell you what you need, not what you want to hear. If you already have the parts, the process of having him do the machine work, would be very little time, I would think. He will not select camshafts, combo for you, but he will make what you want work. This time of year at all the speed shops in this area is not good. All the sprint cars, circle track, figure 8, mud draggers, drag racers, the list goes on and on. A1 service in my opinion, and I have never heard anything bad from them. Good luck on your venture!!
