It should be the same IV block right? .......that 427 from a 60's truck is a "tall deck" block. Not good for street performance because the important things like aftermarket intake mainfolds will not work on tall deck truck blocks without using spacers between the block and intake. calfire Jul 30th, 08, 09:20 PM Well it is free, so I will see how it works out. 1969ProStreetCamaro Jul 30th, 08, 09:39 PM Well it is free, so I will see how it works out. .........not tryin' to dis' your free tall deck 427 but IMO, it would be better to find a decent 454 short block and fill it with all the necessary parts i.e. crank, rods, and harmonic dampner for a standard deck 427.Good luck with your tall deck build. 1969ProStreetCamaro Jul 30th, 08, 09:50 PM Also search "427 Tall deck Block" and you'll find plenty of posts both pro & con on that type of block. Then you will know what to expect if you want to build that tall deck. HIRISC Jul 31st, 08, 06:27 AM You can verify what you have here: http://www.chevcarclubvic.org.au/technical/v8bb_chev_eng_casting_numbers.htm :beers: IDS_Bill Jul 31st, 08, 09:40 AM If the motor is complete - take it! If you decide to go with a regular 427 block vs. a tall block you have fastners, brackets, peripherals and other stuff that can be reused... calfire Aug 1st, 08, 09:16 AM Score, it is not a tall deck 427. Just a 427:beers: okiemark Aug 1st, 08, 10:07 AM you'll always get your moneys worth out of something that is free 1969ProStreetCamaro Aug 1st, 08, 11:36 AM Score, it is not a tall deck 427. Just a 427:beers: Awesome :hurray::beers: speedfreek Aug 1st, 08, 01:33 PM Just wondering could it be a 366? fatblock Aug 1st, 08, 07:13 PM Score, it is not a tall deck 427. Just a 427:beers: Curious as to how you know?Highly doubtful that a standard deck 427 found its way into a HD truck. The 427T has a .400" higher deck than the passenger version and you can easily observe this by viewing the distance between the water pump inlet housing vs cyl head. The 9.8' pass block will be close and the tall deck will have the additional .400" added.I am not saying there was not a swap from tall deck to standard deck in this case..just a simple way to tell the differance between both with the visual clue. 1969ProStreetCamaro Aug 1st, 08, 07:38 PM Just wondering could it be a 366? If it is a 366 BB it's still a tall deck truck block, correct? ace's68 Aug 1st, 08, 07:46 PM If it is not a tall deck like he said it can't be a 366, I don't believe there ever was a standard deck 366. 1969ProStreetCamaro Aug 1st, 08, 07:50 PM If it is not a tall deck like he said it can't be a 366, I don't believe there ever was a standard deck 366. .....that's what I thought!!!!!Thanks  fatblock Aug 1st, 08, 08:00 PM If it is not a tall deck like he said it can't be a 366, I don't believe there ever was a standard deck 366. Correct. The smallest cid standard deck is the 396.The T engines have 3 compresssion rings and an oil control ring and the 10.200 deck to accomodate them. The jury is still out imho as to the block.Everything leads to the original poster sourcing a 427T or perhaps a 366T.Highly doubtfull it is a passenger 427 in an HD unit. calfire Aug 1st, 08, 08:40 PM For those who are interested, I will have the block numbers on Sunday night. As this is when it will be dropped off. Thanks for everyones input, new to BB, always been a SB guy. fatblock Aug 1st, 08, 08:57 PM For those who are interested, I will have the block numbers on Sunday night. As this is when it will be dropped off. Thanks for everyones input, new to BB, always been a SB guy. Calfire..when they drop off the block, see if you have a pinky finger width between the top of the water pump outlet to block vs cyl head.If it is close to 1/2 inch..you have a tall deck 10.200".They only came in 2 sizes as you well know now. calfire Aug 1st, 08, 09:15 PM My brother-in-law who builds motors, got this motor for me. And said that he was 100% sure it is not a tall deck. We will see. calfire Aug 3rd, 08, 09:04 PM Well it is no 427. It is a 4 bolt 454. Block number 14015445. Not bad for free, but not what I wanted. Anyone want to to trade maybe for a 396? ace's68 Aug 3rd, 08, 09:11 PM The only difference between a 427 and 454 is the crank. Why not just keep the block and rob a 427 of it's internals, unless you just want a complete engine... 427 = 4.250" x 3.76" 454 = 4.250" x 4.00" I'd pick a 454 over a 396 ANY day, just my honest opinion. They do make 400+ci small blocks now... calfire Aug 3rd, 08, 09:47 PM Will a 454 look like a 427/396 visually? I am going for a COPO look and want it to at least look some what stock. If it will visually look the same then a 454 it is, if not I will be posting in the classifieds. buenymayor Aug 4th, 08, 12:18 AM The blocks look the same. Stick a 3.76" stroke crank in it and have yourself a 427. You could even build it as a 454 or 496 and just badge it as a 427. It's your call. ace's68 Aug 4th, 08, 10:10 AM The blocks look the same. You can't go wrong with more cubes, and you can make any big block look just about like any of the rest of them. Skeeter55 Aug 4th, 08, 09:02 PM Will a 454 look like a 427/396 visually? I know guys but i just couldn't resist. http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/skeeter55/th_MOV08057.jpg (http://s145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/skeeter55/?action=view¤t=MOV08057.flv)http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/skeeter55/Picture292.jpg Busted Knuckles Aug 5th, 08, 05:58 AM Stroke it to a 496 and have it internally balanced. Since it'll have a neutral balance dampner on it, nobody can tell the difference without looking at the casting numbers and they can't be seen without mirrors, etc. with the engine in the car. You can use closed chamber heads and get good compression with flat top pistons, the optimum combo. Most will wonder how you got that much power out of a 396. I'd like to do the same with a 565 :D Z15CAM Aug 5th, 08, 10:34 PM If you want a 427 just put a 396 Crank and use 427 Pistons. |
