: Cam Change how far to go?
Stewie Aug 1st, 08, 01:46 PM I have a 327 what is supposed to be a 275 horse motor. It has the quadrajet carb and stock manifolds and the double hump heads. I would like to add a little more lump to the cam and I was wondering how far I should go with parts. Is just a cam and lifters enough.
I guess it would be a good time to replace the timing chain. Is there anything else I should look at. It has a stock manifold so I guess I could go with an aluminum one to spice the look up a bit. The motor is pretty tame right now.
bikedude3 Aug 1st, 08, 06:00 PM yes cam lifters and timing chain.headers will make it run better and sound good and look good also
pdq67 Aug 1st, 08, 07:01 PM Any one of many 268/270/272 and even up to a 274 cam will do you nicely, imho!
I know they are all pretty-much old-school, but CC's 268HE, 270 Magnum;
Crane's 272/272 Energizer and 274H06; and
Isky's 270 Mega are ALL dandies in the little engine!
My .040" overbore 300hp/327 had the 272/272 Energizer in it and w/ no more than an old 1850 carb and a cheap set of 1.625" dia., 4-tube, long headers, it ran like a "scalded-dog"!!!

Stewie Aug 1st, 08, 07:32 PM I already have headers and she runs along pretty nicely but I would still like a little more lump at Idle. I would also like to go with an aluminum intake. I have the chrome dress up package as well. I have aftermarket power disc brakes and I am hoping the larger cam will not affect the booster. Will those cams listed work with the stock rockers.
Stewie Aug 3rd, 08, 10:09 AM I checked some of the cams that were recommended and I see several ways of buying them in Kit form. Some are as high as 400 dollars and include springs, retainers, timing gears, chains etc. Is this the best way to go to get the best performance?
pdq67 Aug 3rd, 08, 10:23 AM I don't buy kits, only b/c I can save myself some money piecing a kit together.
But, you may be better off buying a kit.
And if you want some cam cackle, then consider at a min, a 108/108 or even a 106/106 LCA cam! It is the close LCA that give's it that cackle we all like!
Crane's old 274H06 is on 106 and the Isky 270 Mega is on 108. Most of the rest of them are on 110.

Stewie Aug 3rd, 08, 02:38 PM Sorry but what does LCA stand for?
Nantooch Aug 3rd, 08, 02:57 PM LCA = Lobe Centerline Angle.
Stewie, If you go for a cam kit then do try either the CC270H or the Sum-1104 for your cam. Both are either sold separate or with lifters. I would suggest getting taller springs that would handle at least a .520 lift if your planning on non-stock rockers as I did. I chose 1.6 ratio over the stock 1.5's.
The CC270H is a .470 lift I/E 270* duration cam whereas the Sum-1104 is a .465 I/E 280*duration cam.
I just swapped out from the CC cam to the Summit cam as I had wiped the #4 exhaust lobe. The engine has a little different sound to it and behaves a bit different, but is everybit as strong as before.
The main reasons for switching mfg's is that CC has been having issues with their cams failing as of late and that the Summit cam w/ lifters came to just over $100 to my door vs. over $280 for the same CC cam I had before.
ace's68 Aug 3rd, 08, 03:07 PM Is LCA the same as LSA? I have never heard of LCA. Usually I hear the lump comes from the LSA along with the duration.
Comp Cams make good cams and have a 1 year warranty. I bought mine for under $180.00
Go with a cam that will match your application, rear end gears, transmission...
You won't be happy with too large of a cam and the wrong gears, trust me.
I think the cams the guys posted would work good and not be too big.
67 Plum Aug 3rd, 08, 04:37 PM The Crane 274HO6 is a great cam for a 327.You can run stock springs and rockers with it no problem. Has a nasty idle and plenty of vacum to run power brakes.http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CRN%2D100172&autoview=sku
pdq67 Aug 3rd, 08, 07:10 PM And I would at a min., run Z-28 type springs that you should be able to pick up for like $25 to maybe $35 !
Try Midwest Motorsports for these.
They are the .500"+ lift Elgin RV943X springs.
The spring and retainer package and a little-bitty plastic box of Crane keepers is a great bargain by me!!

Stewie Aug 4th, 08, 06:36 AM Thanks for all the help guys. I will start to buy the parts. I still have to figure out what rear gears I have. I have a Turbo 400 Trans. I am only going on what I was told by the last owner.
