I have a 1968 camaro. It was originally a small block v8 car with 4 wheel drum brakes. It is a 4 speed car with a 12 bolt posi traction rear end.
The car has been changed over and now sporting a BB 427. I'm just wondering if there are any identifiers that would be on the car to clarify if in fact it's a factory SS car. Alot of the reference sites I have looked at state that the 1968 model is a very hard year to identify. Anyone have any insight on this?

Well, if the SB was a 350 and the numbers match the VIN, then it is a "real" SS. If not, then it'd be really hard to tell without documentation.

If it has the original Muncie, with an original partial VIN stamp matching the car, and it is an original small block car, it had to be an SS350 or a Z28. A Z28 would not have had drums up front, so if they are original, it was an SS350.

If it is not the original Muncie, it gets a lot harder, but we can give some other clues.

Start with the 12 bolt, is it original to the car and what is the ratio?
All 68 SS's where 12 bolts, the only non SS to get a 12 bolt was the L30/M20 with a Saginaw 4 speed. So any original 12 bolt car with an automatic or a Muncie, was an SS.
