Im very deep into the restoration on my car and was doing some work tonight when out of no where the perfect vanity plate for my car popped into my head... Checked dmv.com and it is available for my state, except I cant buy them because you need a current valid registration, which I dont have..
Is it possible to insure and register an incomplete car? I need these plates! :D:D

You absolutely can register and insure an incomplete car.

When I bought my car, and transferred the title, I was REQUIRED to buy a tag. Seemed sort of silly to tag a project, but I had to spend the extra $25.
I insured the car a few years later, and had a hard time finding a company to insure it unfinished. Haggerty was willing to insure it for about $20k at about 80% complete. Because of that, I never shopped their price, once I put it on the road. (notice I didn't say, "once I completed the car!" :)
For 6-7 years,I've been trying to get the tag UNREAL for my Yenko clone (get it?), but it is still unavailable.
I have an NOS 69 Tennessee Dealer's tag, and I was considering getting that number for my vanity tag, and then run the dealer tag, instead. Everything I have heard or read about Tennessee law indicates that that would not be exactly legal, but close enough to maybe talk myself out of a ticket.

I have had my car insured by Haggerty's for several years now. When I was driving it and since I began the restoration. I call them and told them I had the car "off" the road and was doing a restore of it. I ask them if there was some sort insurance they offered for this type of deal. To my surprise, they do offer a "restoration" policy. You can't drive the car and will not get an insurace card, the car is covered in case of theft or fire, etc. Plus the insurance is at a reduced rate since you can't actually drive it.
I'm guessing other classic car insurance company might offer simular deals ... But since I already had Haggerty's it was seemless for me.

I actually got a "storage" insurance from a company called Farm Bureau when I got the car....now that I want to up the insurance to 35k they are going to send me to Haggerty and said it's no problem...need lots of info and pics.
Into the car for about 32 k now.
$6k more and it should be done.

Had a pretty major fire in my garage back last December (smoking and mass quantities of alcohol don't mix). I had a Allstate deluxe homeowners policy and they were very good at making everything in the garage whole (rates didn't even go up). They asked if I had insurance on the 68? No! They said the policy allowed for $1000. for misc parts for the car, but not the car! I was lucky that the car was OK except for smoke damage, but I lost a lot of original parts for the car that were in the rafters. I guess my point is do everything you can to have insurance for the car during restoration. Just some friendly advice from someone who has BTDT the hard way.

not to give a free plug but Haggerty is pretty good to deal with... I'm not a big fan of vanity plates but broke down and got X66 on my '69 SS. Calif. offers plates that have the palm trees on one side and the sun setting in the bottom right corner. came out pretty cool with the 3 digits in the middle. UNREAL: here's an idea... when I got my AOL screen name, the one I wanted wasn't available so they responded with a long list of similar screen names... go to AOL, try to open a new accout with UNREAL@AOL.COM and see what similar names they send you back.
