Thinking of cutting lager hole in bottom of cowl hood to let it breath better. I have a 14" air cleaner on my 396 and when the hood is closed the air cleaner top just about closes the hole up. Lager hole would let it breath better and help with under hood temps.
Has anyone else did this ?

I wouldn't do it, the purpose of the hole is for the air cleaner to sit up in it and provide a seal so that the carb draws fresh air from the cowl section of the car. If your air cleaner is too big, get the correct size one. The original ones had a regular base with a smaller usually chrome top. They look a little goofy but the base provides the seal so the carb can draw in outside air which is cooler than engine compartment air and thus more power. Just my .02 cents.

I agree with 69Project...........I wouldn't do it:noway:. That cowl hood is designed to work with a 14" diameter air cleaner.

Or try a 10" air cleaner.

yea, except he isn't running the factory cowl air filter (or is he?). If you have a chrome air filter then yea, I'd say it would do some good...or run a KN top lid...

Not going to cut hood. Tuesday I have the ZL2 cowl hood cleaner coming and I am going to see if I can get it to fit under the cowl hood. I have a 69 Camaro 396 with air gap intake, Holley 4150 HP and Canton 1/2 inch spacer. Iam pretty good at making things work. Hope I can.:boxing:
