View Full Version : Reading my plugs....
Skeeter55 Aug 10th, 08, 01:42 PM All my plugs look great, i may be able to get a little more timing out of it. What do you guys think.

speedfreek Aug 10th, 08, 02:20 PM How many miles are on these? I wouldnt go any higher on the timing. They are pretty white now. Maybe back off timing some. What is it set at?
Skeeter55 Aug 10th, 08, 02:29 PM Patrick the plugs have about 50 miles on them and i ran it hard before i shut it down to read the plugs. My initial timing is 16* and total at 34*... There is no pining and im running 91 octane. Oh and my plug gap is at .55
Eric68 Aug 10th, 08, 03:38 PM Do not set the timing based on the anneal mark on your plug strap. Set your total timing based on fastest trap speed at the track. While the anneal mark does move with timing changes you want to set timing for max power, then change plug heat ranges to put the anneal mark where you want it (near the bend in the strap).
The porcelain indicates cruise and part throttle mixture where the end of the threads (flat ring at the end of the threads) indicates your WOT mixture. I like to see 3/4 of the circumference of the end of the threads coated with light carbon -- hard to tell in the pic but yours looks OK at cruise, perhaps a little lean at WOT.
Skeeter55 Aug 10th, 08, 03:54 PM Thanks Eric.... It pulls nice and strong at 6,000 RPMs... I tried to run it at 5,500 and shut it off to read the WOT mixture but it dieseling so i turn the back on.
I know a colder plug might be a good thing, but im going to keep a close eye on these with a little more miles on it at cruise. Then start to squeeze more fuel and 2* timing.
I think it looks safe right were it is, but if someone sees something different please let me know.
Skeeter55 Aug 10th, 08, 04:11 PM OK i put up a couple more pics. Maybe .55 on the plug gap is to much and i should drop it down to .50

^^^^^^.......my thoughts also.
speedfreek Aug 10th, 08, 06:02 PM Just curious, what brand/number is the plug and what is your compression?
Eric68 Aug 10th, 08, 06:09 PM If its dieseling your plug may be too hot. Can you go a heat range cooler?
I run more gap than most people and I use .045" gap, .050-.055" is out there a bit.
I think your tuneup is pretty close though.
Skeeter55 Aug 10th, 08, 06:11 PM Just curious, what brand/number is the plug and what is your compression? The plugs are Autolite 64 and the compression if i were to guess id say 10.5.1
Is this a good plug, maybe i should have started my thread by asking, what plug should i use..... That is a good question and is this a good plug.
NICKO Aug 10th, 08, 06:19 PM .45 to .50 it the end of the road,,,also looks like it wante 2 more jet sizes in the rear, just my 2 cents
Skeeter55 Aug 10th, 08, 06:24 PM .45 to .50 it the end of the road,,,also looks like it wante 2 more jet sizes in the rear, just my 2 centsI'm thinking your right on the rear jets and also MSD recommended to start at .55 the go up or down at .005 increments. So I'm gonna try .50

I think your tuneup is pretty close though.Yeah it doesn't diesel when i idle and shut it off, but when i was WOT and try to shut it off it wanted to run.
Eric68 Aug 11th, 08, 08:42 AM Hmm. that's weird. Can't say I've ever shut mine off at WOT at high RPM / high load though.
Skeeter55 Aug 11th, 08, 03:58 PM Hmm. that's weird. Can't say I've ever shut mine off at WOT at high RPM / high load though.I think its supposed to be WOT then back off and then shut it down. But i tried the WOT and then turn the key off, it did not want to happen.

I've always heard WOT then shut it off clean. Not let off then shut down.
1969ProStreetCamaro Aug 11th, 08, 06:39 PM I've always heard WOT then shut it off clean. Not let off then shut down.
Yep......that's how the round track boys do it. That's how they tune their engines at places like Talladega and Daytona, they shut off clean at the start/finish line and coast all the way around the track, turn onto pit road, then into their garage stall without ever refiring the engine.
Skeeter55 Aug 11th, 08, 06:39 PM I've always heard WOT then shut it off clean. Not let off then shut down.Hey Patric have you ever tried the WOT and shut off. I tried it and my car at 5,000rpms shut off it dieseled.

speedfreek Aug 12th, 08, 04:16 AM Hey Patric have you ever tried the WOT and shut off. I tried it and my car at 5,000rpms shut off it dieseled.
Yes I always shut off clean around 6-7k rpm.
If you car is dieseling that means either it is lean or the plugs are too hot and it's causing it to preignite and that's why it continues to run.
Do you know your jet sizes? I would not run it hard until you've either went one colder plug or upped the jets.
NICKO Aug 12th, 08, 05:01 AM i have had my gas pedel stick WOT and turned it off, it dieseled....scared the s%$# out of me, i feel you need a little more light brown on those plugs..:beers:
Skeeter55 Aug 12th, 08, 08:02 AM Thanks you guys thats what i wanted to hear, ill be on this first thing today. I'm thinking a colder plug and bring the gap back to .50 It run clean right now but maybe in the high RMPs it could use a bigger jet size, ill check it out.
Skeeter55 Aug 12th, 08, 12:21 PM My updates... I re-gap the plugs from .55 to .50 and re=tunned the fuel/air mixture screws it runs little more relaxed at low RPMs and more color on the plugs... Docent ping or smoke, but runs better up top on RPMs.
How do these look..... This is the same plug in pics, 1st pic is inside and 2nd-3rd are in direct sun light so you can see the porcelain.

Eric68 Aug 12th, 08, 12:53 PM Wow! Big difference in how I read that plug between inside and outside LOL
Outside is what I'll stick with and say you are very close but may need a little more fuel. I'm seeing carbon about 1/2 way around the ring. Maybe up one jet size to get it 5/8 - 3/4 around.
Anneal mark is in the right place, perhaps a little cold but I would stick with that plug.
Skeeter55 Aug 13th, 08, 02:07 PM OK i know another video. But this one is fresh done today after the Pro Mag roller rockers, the re-gap plugs to .50, the tuning of carb. Still trying on more vacuum at idle. But it is crisp and snappy.

Soundin' awesome!!!!
Skeeter55 Aug 13th, 08, 08:41 PM I'm getting there David.... Its running better then ever. I was working on my vacuum at idle, its kinda bouncing with the lope of Cam... So i was out in it today for a couple of hours and still without the hood, but it feels nice just a fun car to drive.
