So today we go to a car show up in Boulder Junction and i end up taking first place in my class.:hurray: I was pretty amazed, but quickly chalked it up to all 10 people we went up there with voting for me. After trophy presentation i walked over to the beautiful Corvette Bronze (one owner) '68 Camaro that took second and handed him my first place trophy telling him that i thought he deserved it because all my friends and family probably voted for me and that his car is stunning.
I walked away feeling like i did the right thing only to have my father in law, my sister and my dad ticked off at me for it. I told them to drop it cuz it was only fair cuz i had a 10 vote head start. Just about the time everyone calmed down, the guy with the 68 is up at the judging table yelling at them saying that all 10 cars in our group should be banned from coming again because we cheated!! WTF!!!
The father in law (who'd had at least 4 beers:sad:), his brother and someone else go over to the guy and start a screaming match that almost has the police called.
The guy ends up backing off, and we all return to our cars. I was really upset cuz i thought i did the right thing and this guy turned around and tried to ram it up our hineys.
I found out afterward that 3 of our people DIDN'T vote for me, meaning i won that trophy fairly. I still think his car should have won, but that's beside the point.
Now, i don't give a crap about trophies but that guy pissed me off.

I would have gotten my trophy back from him just because he was a jacka$$. Even if I thought he deserved it. I probably would have given him a shiner in exchange for the trophy.

Jamie if it was peoples choice then screw him, but you were honest and it still nipped you in the but. Dam if you do and dam if you don't.

But congratulations and take it easy on the family they were there for you and some :beers:

It was a "pony car" class; Mustangs, Camaro's, Mopar E-bodies, etc. There were probably 15 cars in my class.

As far as I'm concerned you won first place and that jerk can remember he is a jerk every time he looks at that trophy.
You also gained more than first place you scored some respect points for being the bigger man.
That was a really cool thing you did.

That's just how it is at participant / spectater judged shows, whoever has the most friends along takes home the hardware.

We have a local clubs around here, 30 or 40 old guys, all with stock fords.
Every show they come to, this guy with a kinda rough old skyliner takes first, and a couple stock mustangs take the others, just the way it is.

You did the right thing, and didn'ty deserve what you got for it.

Thanks all. I felt really bad cuz the guy was screaming at the (really hot) woman at the judging table. If i were her husband (who was sitting right there) i would've made his face into mush, but she handled 68 dude well. Apparently they have had problems with this guy the past 3 years. Wish i would've known that!
As i was leaving, she told me they told him not to come back.....ever!

I took a "host" choice award a few weeks ago. I know my car wasn't the best one there, but in "his" eyes, it was the one he liked best. I took that beautiful plaque (my first and so far only award) and smiled hard for the rest of the day. I figure if the guy that has been putting on the show for the past 9 years liked my car the best, who am I to question it. I do see the same guys getting most of the trophies at the shows, but it never bothers me. I also do not park by all the other Camaros. I tend to end up parking near the Mustangs. Not normally done on purpose, just works out that way.

Next time, take the trophy. Some car show guys are just dicks.

Jamie you did an honorable thing that you didn't need to do in handing over your award to the runner up. He should have accepted it with the same class that you showed in presenting it to him. Unfortunately this hobby is full of people that are full of themselves. I won't show any of my cars, never have, never will. Mostly because of the people like the individual you dealt with. They are every where out there. In the end you realized it's just a trophy and he's hung up on his ego. You don't need a trophy to prove you're a winner or to validate your car. The real reward comes from owning, driving and building it.

i was at a car show today that was put on by a local club- maybe 150 cars total, with maybe 1/3 of them being in the host club..
they had a "top 10" list that they gave trophies to based on participant votes that everyone that entered was eligible for- every one of the winners had a participant number of 40 and lower, which to me indicated that they were all club members since i figure they'd be the first ones there. but there were some really bitchin cars there that weren't members of the club that had higher car numbers than i did (102).
but i don't have a problem with that- it's some of the other awards i had issues with. they had an award for oldest car- not nicest oldest car, just oldest car, and not oldest car by a club member- that was won by a 1940 Ford with a low participant number. i figured that the immaculate stock restored 1919 Model T was older, but then again, i'm a high school dropout, so maybe i'm getting my numbers all mixed up. they had another award for nicest "survivor" car that was won by some dude with a 57 Chevy that had a low participant number and really shiny paint and nice chrome and nice interior for a "survivor".
i was thinking about joining the club, but i figured that since i don't drive a 57 Chevy and listen to do-wop music, i'd never really fit in.

Mah, it's a $4 piece of plastic. Hopefully you have more fun being with your 10 friends for the day instead of having more of a desire to get a piece of plastic.

Running shows and being involved in a lot of events we see and hear this all the time. We even made a judging program that lessened the value of buddy votes in the final tally. You would even be suprised in how many people vote for their OWN car, even when we have it say in bold, DO NOT VOTE FOR YOUR OWN CAR - Vote will be disqualified.

So in the end, hopefully you had a nice day out with your friends. Let the Vette owner keep the plastic. There will be more shows ahead.

IMO, The car club putting on the show should not allow club memeber's cars to be part of the spectator judged show-period.

You did the right thing, Jamie. Yes, the bronze guy is a jerk, but, you did what YOU felt the right thing to do. Peace of Mind - you have it now.

Let it go and pat yourself on the back. As said, you got more respect for the effort you did and others noticed, those who care seen the same. They'll remember.

Paticipant voting is good, but as said, club members and friends, can sway a vote. My suggestion would be to have the contestants judge the cars or third party judges, those who don't know squat be the judges if its a contest on the looks. Again, its only the owners who know how much labor went into building the cars/trucks.

Clubs that put on the event or are involved in judging should NOT be able to participate in the event or eligible for any awards.
There were a few clubs around here that did that in the past, a few people spoke up, and it ended. We do still see a lot of shows with favoritism and some where a person doesn’t even show up with their car and they win an award.

Points Judged shows – If it isn’t a national show with legitimate judges, most of the times it’s going to vary on the results. You get a Chevy guy that is judging and he has to point judge a Mopar, it’s not going to be accurate. Plus I may think something looks a 9 out of 10 and the guy next to me might think it’s a 6 out of 10. It’s preference.

Participant Judged – Unless they have a computerized voting system that eliminates buddy votes, then the club with the most members or friends there is going to win. A lot of times, the friends will have similar cars, so some shows make them vote for other types of cars other than their own.

So like I said in the above post, go to a show for the fun of it and to hang out with your friends. A trophy is just the icing on the cake.

You did a very gentlemanly thing--I'm glad you're a TC'er. You see all kinds of things at shows...good and bad.

Our club just produced an annual automobile display and gave each owner a commemorative plaque and $20 in gas for coming out. There was no competition about it. Local companies funded the awards, free gas and the free food and we had a blast.

We also run some shows with no entry fee, free food, moon bounce for the kids and trophies for the 25 nicest cars (determined by participant vote). Again, local businesses foot the bill and we hold them in the shows in their honor. Sometimes they will park a vehicle or other advertisement at the event so they can write it off as advertising. It costs us nothing.

For the 7 annual shows that we produce (yep--we do a lot of shows), we often ask club members to enter their cars for "display only" and have made nice dash signs identifying them as such. We also ask past "Best of Show" winners from the 2 big shows to return as a "display only" car but we award them a "thank you" plaque for coming to the show. Many of them just like being part of the event, supporting the charity and being around car people for the day.

We run a blog at http://http://www.staffordclassics.com/blog.html that details each weekend's shows, cruises and road trips as well as posts pictures of each event. We get about 2,000 hits a month on the site--which is a lot for this area of the US. Natural selection determines which shows/cruises prosper and which fade away.

Ya did more than most would have. Obviously, he was the lesser person, and somehow saw your fairness as a put down... and couldn't handle it.

Just write him off as an air head. Some people are thought to be fools, and eliminate all doubt when they open up their mouths, eh? Like him.

If I were the guy being offered the first place trophy, I'd not have accepted either. I would have offered an appreciation, but told him to keep it. I would not have taken this ridiculous thing any further than politely turning down the first place trpphy.

I gave up car shows a few years ago because of the bull. You tried being nice and it got you booted. It doesn't pay to be nice at them shows because most are rigged already. My last show, there was a nice red 67 SS, a 69 vert rust bucket which needed to be done over but it ran, a 68 dirty with actual cobb webs everywhere, a primered rusty, dirty 68 and my 68 which I spend a few hours cleaning. All the others got a trophy but me. The red 67 came in first and was the right call. After that no other car but mine should have won anything. I mean the other cars were bad, dirty and not worth a win. I don't care that I didn't win but care that junk did win showing how rigged it was. Never been to a shoiw since...

I think I know those guys LOL. I belong to a club that meets in Oswego that is full of old Fords n Rustangs. Not sure how they can be winning on the buddy sytem tho, our club doesn't sponsor or have it's own shows. If you wanna come visit we meet the second Monday of the month. OOPS, I shoulda went today.

Most all car shows are political, from your small local show to the Nat'l events. It's just how it is and has been for a very long time, and doesn't necessarily matter if it's based on votes or against a judging sheet.

Just enjoy the event. If you win something, great. If not, there is no sense getting worked up over it.

i know the feeling........i was at the San Francisco Hot rod and custom indoor show

http://www.sfcustomshow.com/navigation/showresults.html

i took 1st place in my category 61-69 restored convertible...i was completely happy...didnt expect winning anyway....

i was done.....some freinds bought me a beer and a hot dog to celebrate.......we were sitting in the grand stands enjoying the rest of the winning ceremony and one of my freinds heard my named called.....i didnt beleive him at first..but then they called me again...

i went down to the awards stage and he shook my hand and said"you did it!,you took best restored in all restored categories..

I didnt beleive it!!!!

i found out later somebody tried to have my reward takin away. saying my car was fake and not a real Z/28 convertible! "ahhhh duhhhh!!!!!"

i was majorly pissed!!!!!!!!!!

the show was not judging for authenticity!!! Besides, they already knew it was a clone as i had told them. Authentication wasnt even a requirement! The producer of the show already knew of my car months before the show.He wanted the car there!so i brought it. They even debut a picture of the car on there 20 page show booklet....

lost some respect for some people......

just do as i do...expect nothing...if you win anything...be happy!!!!!!!!!

Thats the main reason I avoid car shows... The unnecessary Drama.
You did do the right thing.
Why is there LESS drama in drag racing than car shows? You go very fast and it's certainly more dangerous, but just about everyone is cool at racing events. Besides the occasional slip up.

No good deed goes unpunished..................you showed a lot of character in giving the guy the trophy.

But you could have told the guy he was lucky, that you had chartered 3 buses so all of your coworkers could come and vote for you but the buses canceled at the last minute.

You have to have pretty thick skin when you bring a car to a show or cruise night anymore. And yes, politics play a big part in a lot of them. I never even register my car at any show when I go so I don't sweat winning anything. My car may or may not win anything but I just skip it. That's not what I built it for.
I hadn't been to too many cruise nights or shows in the past few years while I was working on my car. I recently took it to a few cruise nights and was amazed buy some of the stupid comments I overheard about my car. Now my car still isn't 100% finished, I have a few interior things to do still. Most people love the car and have nothing but nice things to say. But some people feel the need to drop their expert comments. One guy said "This car shouldn't even be here, it a race car." I wasn't aware that my car is a race car. One guy was on a cell phone and tells the person on the other end "You should see what someone did to this Camaro, the guy hacked the roof of a coupe and made it a convertible"????? I did?? One guy said to a guy next to him "Why don't you build your car like this?" The guys says back "Yea, I don't think so." I also heard, "I'll bet he trailered this here." Sorry, but I don't own a trailer, I drove it. And there were more just a dumb. I usually stand far enough away to watch is goung on and listen to what people have to say. The funny thing is most of these "experts" don't even have a car or have any idea what it takes to build one. I don't know if this is something new or I just never noticed it in the past. I know not everyone likes every car but I never dis any car at any show. No matter if it's a $5k car or a $205k car. It seems like there are a lot of haters and experts around these shows now.

You all made my brother feel alot better about his decision. He was the bigger guy for sure. I just wanted to go up to the guy and tell him he shoud have been HONORED Jamie thought his car was better then his own and that he should not have felt entitled. BUT, my brother doesn't want his sis to fight any kinda battle for him ;)lol so I did not. We are not a club by any means, just a family of classic car owners. The particapents (55 people)were the only people voting except for judges and after some discussion learned who had and had not voted for his car out of our group. Trust me when i say that 6 out of 55 couldn't have swung that vote lol. Well they say nice guys finish last but in this case little bro, you finished first with all of us. :beers:

My experience with car shows and car clubs are...........

The only car club that I ever became a part of turned out to be a bunch of "I'm better than you or your car, no matter what it is or what you've done to it" egomaniacs. I,at the time, was the youngest member(late 30's) so no one would even talk to me about my Camaro(learned real quick that my Pro Street, or I, was not welcome in a club full of old b******s). I witnessed first hand members voting on other members car's at our show after being told specifically not to do it. I never went back to another club meeting or car show that this "club" has held or even helped organized.

My car show experience.......

I recently attended a car show with my Camaro at my local Sonic that I thought they were sponsoring.......wrong....it was the gang of old b******s:yes:. I started to just drive through and leave but I thought "I'll see if any of them remember me (they didn't). I got ready to cruise and one of them said "stick around, we're gonna give a trophy for people's choice and we would hate to see your name called but you've already left with that "beautiful car". You guy's should have seen the "people's choice"l:). It was a '69 Camaro albeit not very much of one:noway:. The guy had this "spider" fetish or something because the interior of the Camaro had cotton pillow batting(stuffing) pulled apart to look like spider webs and a big plastic spider sitting on the center console and another one on the rear package tray:yes: with a flashing strobe light on the floor and a portable radio playing 70's music(I'm not kidding:noway:)!! The paint had more "spider webbing" in it than his "interior display". The front end sat an honest 6" higher than the rear of the car!!! The engine wasn't even clean, it had dirt all over it. Nothing on this car had even been attempted to be detailed:noway:. I honestly don't understand the owner's "spider" theme:noway: especially since it was not Halloween:wacko:. I had a good laugh:yes: then congratulated the winner with a handshake, then cranked up and started to leave and of course everyone was yelling that they wanted to see a huge burnout but I told them that the car wouldn't do it and I just eased out of Sonic's parking lot and left the premises, knowing that I could "burn 'em down" at the hit of the throttle :D.

That's why when someone asks me "where's your car"?,I tell them that I enjoy driving my car and if you want to give me a trophy, you better have one fast car to catch me to give it to me!!
