View Full Version : What are you using for a Coolant Recovery Jug?
77thor Aug 11th, 08, 03:37 PM Just curious, what you guys use.....
I want to add a radiator coolant recovery jug to my 69 Camaro.
I don't care that much about originality, but I want it to look nice.
Thanks for any/all input.
funbnme Aug 11th, 08, 03:50 PM I have a polished aluminum can with a red top on it...left of the radiator.

Not sure where it came from, but it looks nice & does the job it's supposed to.
77thor Aug 11th, 08, 04:14 PM That's pretty fancy... I don't need something quite that nice.
I had more like an OEM plastic jug in mind.

.......then order a repro piece from some place like Ground Up or Classic Industries or NPD. Another option is a recovery tank from a late model auto from a local salvage yard or order one from NAPA,Advance, O'Reilly etc.........
77thor Aug 12th, 08, 05:14 AM These cars did not originally come with the recovery tanks from the factory, so I don't know which one will fit.
RickD Aug 12th, 08, 05:56 AM I use a stock windsheild washer fluid container and a RS bracket to mount on the inner pass fender. Stock looking and works great.

Now, that's what I had in mind.
So, there is a special bracket for an RS...
Is the bottle the same for both RS and non-RS ??
Does the bottle attach directly to the RS bracket?... because it looks like you have the standard bracket?
Fred Ficarra Aug 12th, 08, 11:19 AM Moroso makes one too. It's where the battery was 35 years ago.

The bottle and one bracket fit both standard and RS cars. The RS cars require a second braket that bolts to the fenderwell and then the standard bracket bolts to that. BUT it don't help us guys with the RS cars.:)

no69x-44 Aug 12th, 08, 06:11 PM Before I started my restro, that's what was in my car as a recovery jug. It was just another wisher fluid jug connected to the radiator over flow.
RickD Aug 13th, 08, 06:47 AM Mine's a RS :)
Microgiant Aug 13th, 08, 10:40 AM I heard someone say they used one off a 70s Nova and it fit under the fender. Hard to find those cheap though.
Mat Klemp Aug 13th, 08, 11:08 AM I used a '75 Nova ,Ventura, Omega tank. Fits great if you do not have factory air.
there is a picture of mine in the showroom engine section.

clwilcox33 Aug 13th, 08, 11:32 AM Mat, you need to upload the picture to the web before you can link to it. It won't link directly off of your computer. See the link in my sig.
Badbird Aug 13th, 08, 12:47 PM I'm not running a coolant recovery jug, however, if I was, you can bet it would look very cool!.....I'd also air brush a couple of jugs on that jug!:thumbsup:
camarrowman Aug 13th, 08, 01:18 PM You can buy universal bottles kit from parts store. Make sure to replace Rad cap.

You're fired, Fred. :D :beers: j/k man.
prostreet69camaro Aug 15th, 08, 02:18 PM Summit sells these overflow tanks. They are plastic and a decent price. They have 2 nutserts on the back and you can mount them to your radiator support.

I did the same thing. Better yet, I mounted mine in between the front of the radiator and grill to the left next to the light. Painted it black and you can't even see it.
You could see the hose comming off the radiator routed to the front.
yellow heap Aug 16th, 08, 09:54 PM I use a Moroso plastic catch can that I modified to allow coolant recovery.
Just stub a small tube into the top fitting, epoxy in place, and cut it so its an inch or so from the bottom.
Fred Ficarra Aug 18th, 08, 05:56 PM And here's the Summit plastic tank on my sailboat.
It has a shutoff on the bottom. I'm not sure what job this tank is marketed to perform but it makes a perfect coolant recovery tank for my boats diesel on the other side of the bulkhead. In and out is from the bottom. The top is overflow or filling. (with a squeeze bottle)
