View Full Version : 2 sp. Power glide
bcdarko Aug 11th, 08, 06:34 PM I have a 1968 Camaro Coupe with a 327. As far as I know the transmission is origional and have matching numbers. I have more top speed than low end power and torque. What should I do...? Leave it how it is, (I'm not worried about the resell price, I prefer to have it set to my standards.) or get a 3 or 4 speed? or what.... mainly, I want to have more torque while still having a high top speed.
Thanks,
Mike
Camaro55 Aug 11th, 08, 07:36 PM I got the same deal man ive got a 327 with the powerglide and im probally changing to a turbo 350. I can figure out how powerglides are so loved by drag racers but mine ant got much low end power at all

Probably the "easiest" swap would be to upgrade to the Turbo 350 or 400 or you could spend a little more time and money and do the Tremec 5 or 6 speed manual swap. Do a search on the Tremec swap to find out all that's involved with installing that trans.
Camaros-n-Chevelles Aug 11th, 08, 08:37 PM The 200 4R is the same length as your Powerglide as well as the Turbo 350. You will not have to get your driveshaft shortened. You can use your stock crossmember. However, you will need to move the crossmember back.

His 200 4R Transmissions are plenty strong. I have one behind my 459 hp 383.
As far as using a stock shifter, here is an option for you.

Now you can run 4.10s, have plenty of power off the line and you will be able to cruise on the highway.
Hope this helps.

They are loved by the drag racers for their efficiency and durability.
The drag racers have WAY more power.
67CamaroRS/SS Aug 12th, 08, 06:59 AM The issue is with your rear gearing, but to have low end you have to sacrifice top end unless you install a tranny with overdrive. I have a Powerglide, but I run 4.10's and I can sping my tires at will. In fact, I can get the car to slide from side to side(police permitting). Do you know what rear you have? If you are getting top end, it's probably around a 2.73 or a 3.08. If you change to a 3.73 or lower(higher numerically), then you will pick up low end and lose top end. Oh, your tire size is going to play a roll in this as well. Cam selection is going be important too.

I got your durability right here- When I was less than 2 years old, my folks were on a road trip with the Camaro and had me in some kind of primitive kid seat on the console between the buckets. At about 65mph, I put my little toddler foot down on the shifter and kicked it into reverse spinning the car off the road and scaring the bleep out of my folks! Dad said this maneuver knocked 10 psi out of each back tire but the car restarted and drove away. Same tranny with 140k in the car now.
All that said, I still hate the powerglide.:D

I think you were real lucky. I put one in reverse at about 50 and snapped the input shaft off in the torque converter. I'm not sure that the rear tires were on the ground when it went into reverse.

I gotta disagree with this.
As compared to any tranny with one more gear, with a powerglide you are starting out in second gear. (The PG's first gear ratio is 1.76:1, roughly the same as second in most 3 and 4 speed automatics)
You can add a third gear cheap with a turbo 350. It will double your torque off the line, with no affect on your highway cruising at all.
Everett#2390 Aug 13th, 08, 04:21 AM As said, going to a TH350 is the easiest and you can use the same hardware. You will have to get a torque convertor if the trans does not comes with one. The PG t/conv has a smalller input OD spline.

All that said, I still hate the powerglide.:DYes, when you select Reverse in a Powerglide, you have selected reverse, regardless of speed. One way to hit the bump stops on the front upper control arms at 100 mph and to leave two skid marks drawn by the rear slicks...............ask me how I know..
