View Full Version : What dmg can a "Neutral Drop" do?
.Bad75. Aug 12th, 08, 10:26 PM Hey guys I had a problem with my car the other day. I was trying to tune the carb, had the car in neutral and blocked "350 /w th-350 combo 10 bolt rear end" and i reved it and i got the crap scared out of me! The car slipped into gear and it just went boom then stalled I guess. Car didnt move thank god! My poor camaro! It started again kinda hesitated at first I guess the cylinders were loaded with fuel I suppose and it drove normal as before.
I dont think I did any damage, but what damage can it cause and do you think I hurt it? The problem was with the linkage off the tranny i fixed it since then I was well mad mad. Just kinda worried.
AlexFolino Aug 12th, 08, 10:33 PM Should be fine.. my friends and i when we were younger used to neutral drop cars all the time for fun and believe it or not 2 of them still run :-)
3forme Aug 13th, 08, 02:41 AM Years ago I had a Ujoint let go and rip up a new exhaust system:(, it can happen.
Fred Ficarra Aug 13th, 08, 11:16 AM I did it once. Only once. Cost me a u joint (it flew across the parking lot) and a 4 speed rebuild. The mainshaft twisted so the new yoke wouldn't install. All I did to cause the problem was to accidentally let my foot slip off the clutch with it idling in gear. That's what you get with a 396 360hp in a 61 bubble top with a T10. One of my first swaps. That setup led to my TH400 in my Camaro because it was nothing but trouble.
Badbird Aug 13th, 08, 01:00 PM Back in my high school days, I knew a crazy fellow, in high school, by the name of Victor Sinacola, who used to constantly do neutral slams on his brand new 1973 Ford Crown Victoria!.....He had three warranty replacements before the dealership caught on!!
JOE58 Aug 13th, 08, 03:07 PM on a side note,....
Back in the day (60s-early 70s) before the high stall torque converters, drag racers used to neutral start when racing. After a few blown up transmissions, start line oil downs, and some injuries this practice was banned by most drag strips.
The early Chrysler trans used to really blow up and make a mess
Then trans shops like B&M quickly developed high performance parts that made the auto trans quite a durable unit for drag racing.
Everett#2390 Aug 13th, 08, 07:43 PM Seen one neutral dump a family guy did at the track, brought wife & kid along for Sat night racing at the local 1/8 mile back mid-80's.
Beautiful '67 GTO, Navy Blue, black interior, 4-spd. Car was real lightweight after 10 feet of movement. Lost the bellhousing, trans, driveshaft, and pinion w/case on the line.
I felt sorry for the guy, family car, no trailer, drove it there.
victimizati0n Aug 13th, 08, 09:13 PM usually the driveshaft lets loose, im betting that nothing happened to your car
i saw some idiot at the strip with 4th gen fbody.. i guess it was his first time racing, and he wanted to be like the "big guys" and rev his car up before leaving.. well he did that, in neutral and dropped it in gear.. he made it about 20 feet with his driveshaft dangling down
i also saw some lady, she was approaching a red light too fast and not knowing how to drive, she jammed it in park.. it was a chrysler mini van (newer style) and i heard a loud bang, i thought for sure she blew her trans up, but she put it in gear again and reved it up, and her transmission was making a clicking noise (im assuming it was the safe so the car doesnt actually engage in park while moving).. i have no idea what she did, but i saw her drive off 20 seconds later

I knew that guys cousin except it was a 77 or so monte carlo. Brand new car bought by dad and destroyed by "Skippy" no kidding on the name.
.Bad75. Aug 13th, 08, 10:38 PM I dont think I hurt anything after driving it around more. I crawled under and it seemed fine and i pulled the diff cover and theres no metal in there so i guess im good. Thanks guys. Hope it never happens again!
Everett#2390 Aug 14th, 08, 04:30 AM Thanks guys. Hope it never happens again! No, you didn't hurt anything. But you never know when it might happen again. A lesson learned. One does become pro-active in preventing this event from happening again, Next time may not be as fortunate, someone might get hurt.
This is why the books and your Dad always say to put the trans in Park and set the parking brake.

i was just about to say that
if that car was tuned good, it wouldnt have stalled and probably ran your foot over and started driving out of your garage

I honestly know there is...
Is there a way to tell if my driveline twisted even a little without taking it to a shop?

If it was the space shuttle, I would dissasmble the whole drive train and magnaflux and check every component.
But it's an old chevy that didn't even get banged hard enough to move the car, I wouldn't worry about it unless there are strange noises or vibrations when you drive it.
And really, always put it in park and set the brake when you are working on the engine. Why did it pop into gear? Is this a 75 with a column shift? Are you engine mounts ok, because if the are original, they could be broken and cause problems like this. I forget what year chevy redesigned the mounts, but it was sometime in the early 70's
Hatman Aug 14th, 08, 04:48 PM I doubt that anything happened to the drive line. What do you think a car with a trans-brake does, plus their on the converter @ 3500-5500 rpms .
zdld17 Aug 14th, 08, 05:58 PM Clean out your pants,, remember to set the e-brake and be lucky you were not in front of the car.
.Bad75. Aug 15th, 08, 04:09 AM Yeah I learned this lesson :D. It has a 3500 stall converter in it, so I guess it would be ok I suppose.

My guess is that if you driveline twisted you would now have vibrations when driving. Since you already checked everything and you don't have any "new" vibrations then you are probably okay.
