I want to get 400-425hp out of my 1969 small block 327. It's rated at 300hp right now. What the best way to go about this with out spending a pill of money??

What the best way to go about this with out spending a pill of money?? jmms Jan 13th, 03, 04:22 PM I was told that you can put a 283 crank in a 327 and you get a 302 out of it. What would that do for me?? boodlefoof Jan 13th, 03, 04:55 PM I would stick with the 327 rather than turn it into a 302. You will lose torque with the smaller engine. Getting 400 horses out of a 327 will require good flowing cylinder heads, and a matched camshaft, compression, and induction combination. It isn't too difficult to do, and could be done somewhat inexpensively using GM parts. Pdq, care to chime in? http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif 1FASTZ Jan 13th, 03, 05:14 PM I agree with boodlefoof, keep the extra cubes. I think with the right components, there's no reason that you couldn't get your 327 to run as good if not better than a 302. Don't get me wrong, a 302 will absolutely scream, but you can't go wrong with a little extra cubes. It really depends on what you want. I have one of those ol' 302s and it runs great, but really needs to run on the high octane racing fuel (actually I mix 50/50 Turbo Blue/Sunoco 94) to achieve it's full horsepower potential. I personally would prefer something with more cubic inches and a lower compression ratio (compared to a DZ 302) to be more pump gas friendly yet run as good or better than a high compression 302. Just my 2 cents. ------------------ X77, Stock matching number 302, 4:10 rear, black int, weld prostars, 2.5" Flowmaster 50 Series http://community.webshots.com/user/lakemg MoeSS396 Jan 13th, 03, 05:16 PM Build a 375HP vette 327, port the heads, headers, bigger carb as in a 650 or so, windage tray, 400 horses that i wouldnt want to tangle with on the street in a small nova or camaro oger Jan 13th, 03, 06:15 PM Just remember the 327 doesn't need the huge heads and cams that the 350 up engines do. It will kill the street ability of the engine if you get too carried away. Granny's 69 Jan 14th, 03, 04:20 AM There was an article a few months back in Chevy High Performance magazine that did such a buildup. The end result was a 408 horsepower 327 that was nicknamed the "iron butterfly". They started with a L79 327/350hp engine and did a basic overhaul. They also ported the camelhump heads and added a small hydraulic roller cam (can't remember the specs). For the intake, they used a Performer RPM and a 4bbl. Holley carb. Exhaust was a set of long tube 1&5/8" headers. Someone priced out the components in another thread about this engine. The total came in at around $2,500.00 . It's not a cheap engine to build, but it's pretty stout for a small cubic inch engine. Mark P. ------------------ 69 Camaro Coup-My Granny bought new in 1969! I chucked the 210hp heads for a set of used vortecs. Pocket ported, new valves, springs, etc. I used the comp cams XE 268, Performer RPM intake, demon 625 carb.... Idles nice, and I can spin my tires at any light...Now I just need to get rid of the PG trans!!! FIRSTGENLT1 Jan 15th, 03, 07:58 PM I tried the Holley system max kit. It comes with aluminum heads, intake , cam, timming chain, pushrods, lifters, and all the bolts you need. I put that on my 327 and got 432 horse power. Its really cheap too. Its about 1300 bucks and takes all the guess work out of what to run with what. sik68 Jan 15th, 03, 09:32 PM Hey FirstGenLT1, is this the kit you were talking about? http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/SM/SMK/300-503.html It looks like such a great deal. Would you mind saying what carb you are using? Geez imseriously impressed. Come spring time I might have to yank the engine and slap this kit on my 327 (link below). Thanks for the heads-up. Compared with the Edelbrock kit, Holley advertizes 10 more on the HP and Torque scales, yet I dont specifically know the differences in area between the dyno curves. Im guessing the Holley kit is cheaper, based on edelbrock prices sometimes seeming a lil high. ------------------ NEW PICS! 1/10/03 My 68 Camaro: Project Whoa (http://www.geocities.com/capitolstrokers/cars_steven) jmms Jan 16th, 03, 04:58 AM Hey FirstGenLT1 That Holley kit looks like the way to go. Did you change your converter or are you still running the stock one? Sorry for so many questions, But this is my first Camaro. I have owned Chevelle's, Monte Carlo's, Bel-Aire's, and bigger cars like Impala's and you had to have at least 400HP to get them things moving. Jim boodlefoof Jan 16th, 03, 05:36 AM I don't personally have any experience with the systemax kit, but the cam looks a bit oversized to me for a street 327. I would personally go with a smaller cam to build more low-midrange torque with the smaller cube engine. sik68 Jan 16th, 03, 06:08 AM True boodlefoof, torque seems like it would be a little lacking. If you look at the link I posted above, you see the dyno test on a 350, torque peaking at 4250 or so, which seems kinda high for the torque range one may want for the street. The other systemax kit comes with a little milder cam for emmissions regulations, all other parts being equal. If the car is a daily driver go with the smaller cam. You cam also order it with a different cam if you want but i think it cost a little more. jmms Jan 19th, 03, 03:27 PM Where did you find the Holley kit for $1,300 |
