My son (16) was at soccer tryouts tonight and broke his heel and ankle during a scrimmage game. He is in a lot of pain physically and is heartbroken as well. He spoke to his coach tonight and will remain a member of the varsity team though he cannot play. We are praying that this is not a permenant, soccer ending injury. We will be seeing several doctors tomorrow and will have more news then.

Hang in there, kids are resilient, I see a speedy recovery... As a parent it's very hard to deal with children in pain, I'm sure you find yourself wishing you could swap places with him, I know I have with my own kiddo. My thoughts and prayers for a great report from the doc's tomorrow...

You're doing the right thing, Mary Beth. Get several opinions and go with the best. The chance of a full recovery depends on the quality of the repair.
Keep it on ice tonight for the swelling.....

As an old jock and a father I feel both of your pain!I have had my share of sports related injuries of which two have resulted in surgeries including my ankle. On the bright side a broken ankle/heel is a much better injury than an achilles or torn ligaments so of the more serious ankle injuries your son suffered the one that will heal the best. Best of luck to you both and wishing your boy a speedy and sound recovery.

PS- i always used the doctors for the 49ers Dr. Dillingham or Ting. I would contact U of M or someone on the Spartans staff to find out who they use for a team orthopedic/doctor for the football program

OUCH!! Here's hoping for a speedy recovery. Like mentioned, kds are allot more resilient than us more "experienced" people. Hopefully the doctors have good news for you tomorrow. I'm sure they will. Best of luck!!

The poor kid will miss his soccer more than worry about the pain after its all set and in the healing process. Its always harder on the parents as mentioned, been there done that. We will pray for speedy recovery and tell him the Camaro guys are rooting for his team.

Just came from first doctor. (2nd if you count urgent care last night) He says he isn't sure it is broken, but a ligament torn away from the bone. They have to have an ortho radiologist read the x-rays and they will call us. Could be MONDAY before we know. Tell me that isn't NUTS!

^^^^^^^^^ What they all said. I believe he'll be just fine later as kids are resilient, moreso than us oldsters.............

This is nothing new in my life. I grew up as a figure skater and crutches were (and still are) present in our house. The medical consensus is that the foot is not broken, but may as well be. He will not be casted, but will be in a splint for at least two weeks, with no weight on his foot. Hmmm, knowing my son like I do, I almost wish they would cast it. It would probably be safer.

Good luck! My own kids are all involved in sports. Trips to the Orthopedic are fairly common place at my house. It's true ... Kids really do bounce back quickly.

I feel for you and I know as a parent it's not easy. But please rest assured - This too shall pass.

I wish your son the speediest of recoveries. Hang in there kid. Both of you.

He was battleing for the ball (sweeper) and got tangled in another kid's feet. When his ankle rolled it popped. He didn't think much of it and played a few more minutes. When he took his gear off afterward, we discovered we had a problem.
