View Full Version : hood hits breather
jus4funn68 Aug 15th, 08, 11:16 PM I finally drove my car today for the first time in 6 yrs. Everything was fine until I tried to close the hood with the air filter on it. It is the OEM open element that came on L-78 cars but I got the thinnest air filter I could find and the hood still hits. I even cut my new hood insulation and it still won't close. Anyone had this problem? It's a 68 with the SS hood.thanks for any help, Kevin
bertfam Aug 15th, 08, 11:29 PM Kevin, what intake and carb are you running? Some aftermarket setups are taller than the originals.

jus4funn68 Aug 16th, 08, 12:22 AM Hi Ed, and thanks for your help. I know you have an L-89 and have knowledge of these things. It has the 163 winters intake and a 700 double pumper Holley right now. I have the 4053 DZ carb on the shelf for the time being. I don't think that this 4778 Holley is any taller than the 4053 is it? I could be wrong. I held the 4053 beside it and they look to be the same. Im wondering if the motor mounts has been changed at some point. The car had an L88 fiberglass hood on it when I got it, and the SS hood was standing up in the corner so I used it. Until now, Ive not tried to close the hood with the breather on it.
bertfam Aug 16th, 08, 10:59 AM Kevin, yes, the carbs are basically the same so that shouldn't be a problem. You do have the correct air cleaner base right? It's the one that slopes down (for want of a better description). There are some repops out there that don't "slope" enough. HERE'S (http://www.rickscamaros.com/product.asp?pf%5Fid=EP%2D102&dept%5Fid=3152) one from Rick's that's correct.

jus4funn68 Aug 16th, 08, 04:38 PM From the looks of the picture, my base may not be that low. Is there anyway you can take yours off, lay it on a flat surface and measure up the where it seals on the carb? I got under the car today, measured the tower mounts and looked at the motor mounts. The towers measure 2 1/4 to the center of the bolt L side and 1 3/4 R side. So it is leaned toward the R side like is suppose to be and from what I read on an old thread I think the towers are the right one. The motor mounts look like the ones I looked at in a NPD catalog. The motor mounts on the engine or the base is the only thing I can think of. If you or someone can measure their breather base for me, that would at least end the speculation on that part. Thanks again for your help. Kevin
bertfam Aug 16th, 08, 05:03 PM Okay, it was a little difficult to get an exact measurement since the vent hangs down below the base. I used a soda can cardboard container turned upside down to place the base on and got a measurement of (approx) 2-5/8" from the bottom to the upper part.

jus4funn68 Aug 16th, 08, 05:14 PM Thanks for going to this trouble Ed. That is exactly what is wrong with my situation. I just measured mine and it sits much higher than yours. I will be on the hunt for an original but in the mean time I guess I will give Ricks a call. I apperciate your help very much. Problem solved! Kevin
bertfam Aug 16th, 08, 05:31 PM Kevin, if by "higher" you mean deeper, then that's good. If not, and you mean shallower, then yes, that's bad. What was your measurement?
Ed
jus4funn68 Aug 16th, 08, 08:05 PM Ed my was MUCH shallower. It only measured 1". I have no idea where this base came from and why it was changed other than that the previous owner had put an L-88 hood on and had a lot more clearance. Regardless, it is not the correct base and that explains why several things didnt look or fit right. Thanks again for your help. Kevin
bertfam Aug 16th, 08, 08:50 PM No problem Kevin. Good luck on the "hunt".
