View Full Version : TKO 600 Problem?
Buzz0 Aug 17th, 08, 03:46 PM I just finished with my installation Wednesday and drove the car to a show in Kansas City on Friday. After about an hour at highway speed I stopped for gas and some lunch and noticed something odd. When I pushed in the clutch and pulled out of 5th gear the shifter just kind of hung up. In other words, neutral didn't really feel like neutral any more. I had to move the shifter over rather than have it spring back to the center (between 3rd and 4th).
When I got done with lunch and the car had a chance to cool down, everything felt normal again, neutral was nice and loose. At the next stop I had the same thing happen. I could pull the shifter over to the left between 1st and 2nd and it would stay there, same for 5th and reverse. I can shift into and out of each gear just fine, there are no odd noises or grinding, just the sludgy feeling neutral after a few miles. When the car cools down for a while the shifter springs back to the position between 3rd and 4th like it should and feels a lot looser. Anybody have any idea what might cause this?

Did you pretest the shifter before mounting? After you mounted it, did you go through the gears 10-15mins with the car still off the ground/on jacks and running? CC5spd suggests both of these things be done prior to driving it. Also, be aware that there's an estimated break-in period of approx 600 miles (I think it's 600) to where the shifting gets even smoother. But I admit, your symptoms don't sound normal. You used the right GM or Penz gear oil...and filled it after install?
Buzz0 Aug 17th, 08, 07:09 PM Yes, followed all their instructions. The "stiff neutral" is only after driving for several miles and everything warms up real good. Everything cools down and neutral is free and easy again. It doesn't matter if the car is moving or sitting still. I have 510 miles on everything, engine trans, rear end, clutch, flywheel, etc.
The only thing I can think of is the fluid. CC5S instructions said to use GM Syncromesh or DexronIII. I used the Dex3 cause that is all Autozone had.
murph's 68 Aug 18th, 08, 03:12 PM I thought the instructions said GM syncromesh or Penzoil syncromesh. I don't remember seeing anything about Dexron III. Just a thought as I just installed my TKO 600 and bought the fluid this past weekend. Might not mean anything.

bighaas79 Aug 18th, 08, 04:08 PM ya the syncromesh is different than dex3, so if that is what was supposed to be put in it ya might want to get it changed out.
67motorcat Aug 18th, 08, 05:05 PM I don't remember anything anywhere about Dex3 in the TKO's??..I use GM syncromesh in mine available at any GM dealer.
Vegas69 Aug 18th, 08, 05:34 PM Just installed mine and it was Sycromesh GM or Penzoil. Autozone has the Penzoil.
68 Ragtop Aug 18th, 08, 05:35 PM Everthing I have read has said only use the GM or Penzoil syncromesh.
I used the Penzoil from NAPA, no problems.
Change that fluid before doing anything else.
Buzz0 Aug 18th, 08, 07:27 PM I spoke to GM Jim today and he said the Dex3 just makes a little more noise than the Syncromesh so all is well with the fluid. I'm going to change it anyway, can't hurt. Jim said that he suspects the shifter may be machined a tad tight so I am going to loosen the bolts holding down the shifter the next time I get the trans good and warm. He said that it might also be the nylon bushing that the shifter sits in so I need to pull that out and lightly sand it down.
I can't say enough good things about the folks at CC5S. They are not only friendly and helpful but they know these transmissions like the back of their hands.

I second that...my brother in law and myself bought and installed TKO's over the winter and he had a problem with his, second gear issue, Jim arranged all of the warranty service locally and he did not go out of pocket for anything, top notch did the re and re and back in the car and on the road again!
I would not hesitate to recommend them!
