Especially since this probably didn't come off a Z28 like he says!!

EBAY AUCTION (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1968-Chev-Camaro-Z28-SS-RS-4-speed-Console-Guages_W0QQitemZ120293457484QQihZ002QQcategoryZ616 1QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).

Well it may go in a Z!!!! But that is a little bit more than I would have spent. Maybe 600-800 for the center console, 400-500 for the harness. it does look nice. No idea what the guages go for.

Ah, so Chevy had interior parts that were specific to the Z28 variant? Jeez, I hate when guys do that!!!! I am still looking for a Z28 dome light.

Okay, so here's the test. Why did that probably not come off a Z?

Correct Jon. The Z28 (and the L78 and L89) came with the 6K Tach. Final exam time... So what did this probably come out of?

Close John. I'll give you partial credit!

Anyone else?

5.5k redline was just an L34/L35 thing... The Z and L78 were 6k and the others were 5k...

Before anyone freeks too much over the auction price, buying repro the tic-toc, speedo, housing, and 4 sawtooth as an assembly would run you about $1050. Add the console, lid and other pieces along with the wire harness and you have maybe another $1000... If everything in the auction works and cleans up nice I think it's a good deal at $1600.

Ding ding ding... We have a winner!!

Although exceptions have been noted*, as Dennis stated, the L34 and L35 came with the 5.5K redline from the factory in 68.

*That's why I said "probably"!

Well, not from a solid lifter car, but still a desireable BB redline.
Nice original parts for about what it would cost for brand new reproduction parts.
I was watching this auction, and it went for a few hundred more than I expected.
There have'nt been many 68 tach on ebay lately, maybe there is a little pent up demand.

From The CRG Hyper-Table for 68:

Some variation in tachometer red-line versus engine have been observed, perhaps due to factory shortages. For example, some L35s have been seen with 5k red-lines, and some L48s have been seen with 5.5k red-lines. The values shown are the norm, but, by themselves, are not reliable indicators of a model.

Add $470 for the under dash wiring and drop the $200 misc and you're right at $2000... It all really depends on what you want, having orig parts with a little patina vs spit shiny new and maybe some tiny details incorrect...

A lot of you guys don't seem to put much value on 'original from the factory'... . ie.. preferring instead that crap sold as reproduction which you can pop online and order from japan and other such countries?.... Has everyone REALLY seen the function and appearance of the 'reproduction' parts hold up over time? Let's wait 40 yrs and see if the repro stuff of today looks (1/10) as good as the original items do now.. *G*

bertfam
Aug 19th, 08, 12:48 PM
Gary, you're making a lump statement about ALL reproduction parts and that's not fair. There are a TON of repop parts that are just as nice, if not better than GM originals. Even Chevrolet has started selling repops!

I'm not saying I'd rather have reproduction than originals for everything, but I AM saying that in some specific cases, yes, I'd rather spend the money on NEW parts than old parts. Especially electrical parts.
