View Full Version : Yenko Clone 'vert?????
IDS_Bill Aug 18th, 08, 03:29 PM Did anyone see this on ebay? It's a Yenko Convertible Replica?????
It's not very well done and is totally incorrect but if you pull the Yenko emblems, it's a decent little convertible and might be fun...

bertfam Aug 18th, 08, 03:46 PM Yeah, it's been on ebay 16 times since January and it just won't sell. No one wants it probably because it started life as a 6 cylinder car. I agree though... It's a fairly nice car. They should have left the 6 in it though. A Los Angeles L6 Camaro Convertible is rare by itself!!

funbnme Aug 18th, 08, 04:05 PM What makes it a yenko clone? I'm not one to bash a non-numbers matching car or even a clone. I've just never seen a yenko with those stripes or that hood.
I haven't seen every yenko, but it just seems to be trying to get some lookers by using the yenko name & a couple decals.

You are very correct. They stuck the '68 Yenko fiberglass hood on it and some badges and called it a Yenko. The motor is not a 427 and isn't even from the right year (brackets are 69 or later). It is an L6 car (look at the heater core). 120mph speedo. Edelbrock carb. Cast Iron manifold. Oh and IT'S A CONVERTIBLE......... :noway: I like the color though, pretty close to the Bolero Red that's going on my car this week...
Why go the Yenko Clone route on it? If they wanted to make it a believable repro then do an SS396 vert clone. But go all the way my man! Very messy job IMHO... But it'd be a fun project nonetheless...
Unreal Aug 18th, 08, 05:28 PM I think it's a pretty nice driver. IMO, no more valuable than any 68 convertible with a 454. Probably worth about where the current bid is $28,600.
I don't know the details to look for to be a technically correct stinger hood, but that one looks at least "similar" to others I've seen.
RSSSfanatic Aug 18th, 08, 07:33 PM Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't a lot of the Yenko's in 68 have the factory SS striping, since most of them were converted SS's and not true COPO's?
It looks like someone did a very messy job installing a trunk pan. I would take a close look at the floors and rockers before bidding.

All of the 68s were conversions. Most, if not all were L78 in order to simplify conversion. Many did have COPO 9737 sports car conversion, which included 15" wheels, larger sway bar, and 140mph speedo. There has been a persistent rumor about one COPO "mule" in advance of the 69 COPO9561 427, but to date there has been no proof.

Correct my friend. In 67 and 68 the Yenkos started life as SS396 cars so they had striping...
JOE58 Aug 19th, 08, 07:39 AM The hood looks like a Yenko 68 hood
The 427 emblems don't look like the correct Yenko 427 emblem
Most info on the net on Yenko Camaros is on the 69s but the Yenko Camaro program was quite different for 67 68 69.
There is not a lot of good info on 67s and 68s
Yenko did order some special COPO 9737 Camaros in 68 as part of a Sports Car Conversion but not all the Yenko 427 Super Camaros were built from the COPO 9737 Camaros.
In some of the Chevy documentation it even calls COPO 9737 the "Yenko Sports Car Conversion"
In 1968, I don't believe 15 inch wheels were part of the COPO 9737 package
The Pontiac rally wheel is on the Yenko Camaro in the original ads and other photos
Many people think it is odd to use the Pontiac rally wheel but I found an early 1968 Chevelle option booklet that shows the Pontiac rally wheel with a Chevy bowtie center cap.
Could this wheel have been a Chevy option but was cancelled and Yenko sellected it from an early 68 option list? not sure but maybe
Most of them were 375hp but some were auto trans 350hp cars and at least one has been found with AT and AC.
Most probably had SS stripes but not all had the SS stripes as one was found with special paint (dash no code trim tag) and is said to have had the 67 nose stripe painted on at Yenko's
can't believe this link still works as it is about 10 years old but this car was found with COPO
paperwork and was thought to be a 1968 COPO 427 but most think they incorrectly decoded the paperwork and it is really a COPO 9737 SS396 375hp converted by Yenko to 427 power.
This is the special paint car said to have had the 67 nose stripe painted on at Yenko's

Unreal Aug 19th, 08, 08:22 AM I never read that article before, but it was interesting reading. It could be, as you say, that the misinterpreted paperwork may be the source of the "One of One" 68 Factory 427.
I've heard the story of the "MV 427" on the paperwork. Has anyone actually ever seen it?
Ten years later, and still no proof....I suspect that's because proof does not exist.
I guess it just does not make sense that Chevrolet would build a 68 COPO mule, especially since the L78 is identical in every way, except bore. What's to check out? Plus, why would they build a 68 mule, and still make Yenko wait until January to get his first 50 units, 5 months into the production year.
I still think the non-converted 68 COPO9737 are cooler than the actual converted ones! What a great story to tell! (note, I did not say more valuable, just cooler)
IDS_Bill Aug 19th, 08, 09:20 AM What a great article - thanks!
