View Full Version : Big block clutch return spring Mounting
vaughan69 Aug 18th, 08, 05:04 PM I have a 69 camaro with a 396 and headers (4 speed) Can I use the extension bracket to attach the clutch return spring to (which I do not have) or do I have to put a clamp around the headers and hook to that like the small block guys.
Not sure of the headers except they are long tubes with heat wrap

Skeeter55 Aug 18th, 08, 05:06 PM You should be able to connect one end of the spring to the fork (were the rod goes) is a hole and the other end bring it back to the frame.
vaughan69 Aug 18th, 08, 05:10 PM The frame seems to be far away from the fork and is basically blocked by the headers:confused: i was thinking it should be more straight (front to back) and inline with the bellcrank movement
Eric Kammerer Aug 18th, 08, 06:19 PM On an OE installation, there was a little extension to one of the exhaust manifold studs that the spring hooked to, so you can't do it that way. Hose clamp on the header is the only way I have seen it on header cars.
P.S. Welcome to TC!

Z15CAM Aug 19th, 08, 05:39 AM I've run my Muncie forever without that spring and never had problems with the Release Bearing riding the clutch diaphragm.
Codi Aug 19th, 08, 06:53 PM Don't try it without the return spring. I fashioned a bracket out of 1/8 metal. Designed to bolt with the oil pan with 2 bolts to the block and it had a slot for the return spring extension. Kinda looked like a bizarre "P" shape.
Z15CAM Aug 19th, 08, 10:03 PM I'm thinking my 70 with a return spring on the Pedal Bracket is enough to keep the release bearing off the diaphragm, maybe 1st GEN Petal Bracket is different. I get about a 1/4" petal play before the release bearing contacts the diaphragm. I do see a return spring mount on the Z Bar though. I thought about about utilizing it but seems there is no need.
Vegas69 Aug 19th, 08, 11:29 PM I have a throttle return bracket and springs bolted to the front side of my blow proof bellhousing. Now way to do it any differently with a remote oil filter, rack and pinion, and lemonds 2 1/8 headers.

The danger in running without the spring is having the rod fall out of the little cup in the fork and losing clutch function.
Vegas69 Aug 20th, 08, 03:12 PM I used a spring between the clutch fork and z bar as well. No chance of it falling out. The throwout bearing is not supposed to ride on the pressure plate at all times. It will wear out prematurely.
Straight-line-69 Aug 20th, 08, 10:15 PM Originally, the spring attached to the engine's frame mount. With headers, you have to get creative.
I use the hose-clamp around the primary tube rig. No problems.
vaughan69 Aug 25th, 08, 04:03 PM Thanks for all the comments guys. Went with the ol' hose clamp around the header, works great!:)
