View Full Version : Oil Leaking From Trans?

I have a 67 350 4sp with what I would guess is an M20 trans. My question is about oil that I believe is leaking out of the front of it. I was reading about the type of oil that should be in there, like Sta-Lube GL-4 and it seems as though this type of product is fairly dark. The oil that I see looks like regular oil, light in color. Seems like its coming from somewhere up around the front by the bell housing. Is that correct, do people put regular oil in the transmission sometimes? If not should I swap it out? Is it even possible to drain it without taking out the trans or turning the car on its side?:)

Is the trans aluminum? Alot of times the oil leaks out around the cluster front pin hole. About 1 inch in diameter. Some newer oils are clear. The aluminum case gets stressed around the pin and then the oil starts leaking. I always smell the oil and can tell if it is engine oil or trans oil. Pull dip stick and smell oil and look at color to see if the same. If not, then you no it is definently trans oil and judge what you want to do at that point. My car leaks every so litely that i do nouthing about it. I wipe off trans about 1 time a month. People have sent there trans in for some kind of bushing and seal machined in case to fix issue. If there is no lower plug in passenger side of trans you need to pull out to change oil. I was thinking that you could possible run car and get it hot and find some kind of sifoning tube and try to get as much out as you can. All my trans have drain plugs. When i would get to were you are i would pull trans to clean and check how bad pin leak is and same time look at gears and then put in correct oil. I have put on different front cases for just having drain hole for future changes. I don't no to what extent you are capable of doing but possible drill and put plug in yourself. The boss should be there

I think it's aluminum, but not sure. It's a 66 Muncie. It's definitely different from the engine oil because I have a leak there as well. There is a plug there, but if I open it nothing should come out right, because the level of oil should be right at the plug line, correct?

There are usually one or two plugs. If you have one than thats the filler and if you have two you have a filler and a drain.. Kind of should be a boss for the lower if you only have one. How bad is your leak? Have extra trans for pics for you. If you send me PM with email stuff will send you pics. Level should be with the top plug, yes.
