View Full Version : Throwout spinning in fork

My '68 has a Muncie M20 in it. I had problems with the clutch chattering so I replaced the flywheel and bearing retainer (had already replaced the clutch and PP).

The chatter was mostly gone, but then the throwout started spinning in the fork as I engaged the clutch. So I pulled it back apart and changed the throughout to one with the pin that keeps it from spinning. The fork looked fine and the bearing fit pretty tight (it's installed on the fork properly).

That fixed it for a while, but now it's started doing it again, only louder as the pin is hitting the fork springs as it spins.

I guess I'll change the fork, but this seems like an odd problem. I've been playing with these cars for a long time and haven't seen this before. Has anyone else?

Is the throwout bearing backing off the clutch fingers? Aftermarket blow proof bellhousing?

I have seen people put the throwout bearing between the fork face and the 2 spring clips thinking they hold it in place. The spring clips and fork face all go inside the bearing race.

Stock bellhousing (621) and it's adjusted so the throughout is off the fingers with the pedal up. It didn't seem to start doing it until I replaced the bearing retainer, but I don't see how that could effect it as I checked it with a micrometer when I put it in. Like I said, weird. :-)
