My '69 has the Remote control Outside Mirror on the drivers side (and no mirror on the RH side). I think this is/was a rare option, as I've seen very few of them over the years. How rare was his option? Was there a 'Dual Remote Sport Mirror option' as well?

My real question: I'd like to add a RH mirror to my car, but I don't want to do anything to 'screw it up'.. Was there a possibility of having a RH mirror for a car with the Outside Remote Mirror Option ??

Gary there were 7,771 D33 left outside remote mirrors sold in '69... That's the only mirror option I know of other than the visor vanity mirror...

Thanks Dennis.. a lot more than I thought, but still a tiny fraction of all the Camaro's produced.

What do people with original cars do if they want a RH mirror?

My 68 came with deluxe interior and the remote driver side mirror (only). You can buy a matching pair of standard (non-remote) mirrors, but I have not seen a passenger side mirror that matches the remote driver side one. Has anyone else?

RH std mirror was an accessory for dealer installation.

Really? What went over the factory holes when there was no mirror on the RH side?

There were no holes until the dealer put some there and then the mirror covered em.:)

Hey Dennis/guys...been considering putting remotes on a '68 on both sides for some time now...do you think that this would be overdoing it? They are origs, but the Cam only had two standards when I got it.

Ted I've been kicking over installing a RH mirror for some time. I have a factory installed LH with remote. I haven't found a RH to match it and have been toying with modifying a LH remote to fit on the right door.

Another solution is aftermarket or another year like the sport mirrors off a '70 Camaro. Even then the RH isn't remote adjustible.

So...did the first gens come with just the driver's side remote, with a dealer install for the pass side? Or were both sides dealer installs?

Can't say I've ever seen a car with both sides with remotes, and very very few with even the one. I see where there are repros available, but if like other aftermarket items, they won't compare to the orig, eh?

I know for the longest time there wasn't either the gasket nor bracket available for the remotes, but I think they are now.

The rubber gasket is available but it sure doesn't fit as well as I would like. I think the dealer installed a RH match for the stock LH, have never seen a RH that looks like the LH remote... The LH remote was a factory option (RPO D33). I'm sure it could have been ordered and dealer installed as well...

I'm not surprised. The base on the repo mirrors I've seen is shaped different then the original on my 69.

Dennis I've also wondered if a LH remote could be adapted for a passenger side mirror. I don't really car if the RH mirror is remote or not, but the standard mirrors are totally different in appearance from the remote. Maybe you and I could get together on this effort and figure out a reasonable option for a *matching* RH mirror for us 'factory remote mirror' guys....

Gary, I've heard of guys playing with the dremel and some how modifying the base to make it fit. I too, have been toying with the idea of going just with the one remote, or putting up the second, which I am lucky enough to have.

I think that one would somehow make the car lose some of it's symetery...and l look unbalanced with just the one. IMO

I've also met from a guy at a meet who said that he wasn't happy with the repro remote, and sent it back. Quality issue.

Gary - I'll help any way I can... My goal is to end up with a RH mirror that matches my LH remote. I don't care if the RH works remote or manual. GM had to use the same basic design mirrors on other cars and and might make a good parts source. I don't think you could take away enough material from the center part of a LH and make it work for a RH as the angle of the edge that positions the mirror is too great. The piece would end up being half size and wouldn't fit the back of the mirror piece once cut...

Ted - most cars from the era didn't come with LH door mirrors so nobody sees the car as out of balance, it's just the way it was back then. My desire for a mirror on the pass door is I am use to them on modern cars and it would greatly aid backing situations and lane changes...

Dennis, I agree with all you said in your post... we have the same goal, and apparently have come to the same conclusion thus far... I *hate* backing without a RH mirror since most of my cars for the past 30 yrs have had them. Is there a website we can post a photo of the remote when came on our cars, and inquire if anyone with a different GM car has similar/matching RH mirrors? OR.. there might be a possibility of finding a RH mirror with a similar 'base', and mounting a LH remote mirror portion to it?
