Hey guys i know where a ran down huge shop full of about 20,mustangs 8or9 camaros novas chevells and others .Coverd in about 20 years of dust.Almost looks like the place was abandoned years ago. I have not dove into trying to find the owner for i do not have the kind of money it might take to buy all the cars but it is definetly a gold mine.its in the dallas ftw area.If someone with financial backing would be interested let me know.who knows they may have all been stolen back in the 70s i just dont understand why they would just be sitting like they are.But i have recently went back and checked on them and nothing has been touched since i first saw them 8yrs ago.Just a thought maybe something to do.

How do you get into a building to see these cars w/o going thru the owner?

A friend of mine rides 4wheelers the trail he rides goes behind the bldg. the bldg is not sealed up you can actually walk up to one of the bldg and see inside. The bldg next to it is a little more complicated. I have not seen all of the cars close up (did not want to get in trouble) So who knows what kind of parts could be in there.I just cant think of a reason why someone would have all those cars in a falling down bldg like that. Many of them have bird dropins and most all of the cars i saw had flats.Like i sad they have 20yrs of dust on them.

Go search the 'plats' at the county courthouse....where taxes get paid. Every landowner is named out on a map called a 'plat'. They will usually help you. Also some bigger metro areas have all this stuff online and usually free. Some charge though. It is public information.

Your first post you said dfw area so yeah I hope I got the state right:D

Just do an internet search for 'xxx county court clerk', sometimes the info is under assessor, fork over their 20 bucks or whatever for 1 search or 1 week or whatever and bang you got all the info available, and if taxes are delinquent. And like I said sometimes the internet assessor data is free dude.

Get a general idea of information written down, city nearby, names of roads and streets, maybe another home or building that is occupied nearby, get that address for reference, then as others have said, local county court house assessors office or even auditors office. Either of them can then help you wade thru the plats or city information. Someone must be paying the taxes or it would be sold for back taxes, including contents.
Maybe a single dude with no relatives owns it and he died, probate doesnt know the building is in his name or a host of other excuses but for some reason, its there and locked up. Go quietly too, dont tell anyone else what you are doing or why. Once you have the name, attempt to call or mail that person. If no answer, then its time to talk to lawyer about options. :) I love a mystery.

If you can get the address or the Tax lot and block from a neighbor ( tell then you want to buy the property and CLEAN it up or something, then got to the local tax assessor and the will give you the current owner info. I actually do this qiute a bit as i'm a land surveyor that find a few cars from time to time in my travels.

It shouldn't be too much trouble to get an address nearby if the actual site address isn't available, then use maps to pinpoint the place.

http://www.dallascad.org/ Dallas county
http://www.tad.org/ Tarrant county

Does this earn me a shot at one or more GM products at the place??

If you can get an address and have a friend who works for a title company or a friend who is in the lending business they can look it up for you . I can go on my title companies web site right now and put the address in and tell you in two seconds who owns the property , when they bought it , the mailing address where the county property tax bill goes to..... not hard to get that info. Interesting story though for sure !

If the cars were stolen 30 years ago, would the statute of limitations come into effect on this? i think its ususally only 2 or 3 years. In other words, could the cars still be recovered by their rightful owners?

IF and thats a big IF, they were stolen and IF insurance paid out on them, the insurance company owns them.

I think that the cars might be returned to the original owners. I heard of a Corvette that was recovered amd returned to it's rightful owner that was stolen twenty years ago. The car was found as it was being loaded onto a boat to go overseas, it had never been registered the whole time it was missing in the US. Of course I don't know if the car had insurance on it at the time of the theft. I think this story was in the news within the last year.

that story was in the news about 3 years ago, the car was stolen in the 70s and returned to the owner. the owner now lives in california. I saw the car ( restored) and met the owner at corvettes at carlise in 2007.

Im working on it guys i live about an hour away and had to work today so i will get some picts as soon as possible. I forgot to mention the six or seven coevetts i think one is a 65or67 427. And as far as finders fee goes i would have to have a percentage of the total profits been working on these cars for a long time .just dont have the kind of money to offer the owner if i do find him/her.Will try to get picts day or so.

Being in the business for nearly 30 years now, I run accross a lot of stuff. A lot of stuff I could not buy or did not want to buy, but a deal for someone else. I have recieved a lot of bird dog fees over the years. Believe me you are best to get a straight number, make your money and find the next ones. If you get involved in the profits, then you have to hope the buyer handles it right, tells the truth, (how much they sold for, how much they invested), you don't want to try to police all that.

Just make sure your dealing with someone that will take care of you properly. I have seen some pretty fat checks from this guy.

If it had been insured, the guy would have signed over the papers/title to the insurance company to be paid out at the time and would have no rights to the car no matter the increased value after so many years. The ones who get the cars back are the poor guys who had no insurance on them when they were stolen. For me to get my insurance check on my 69 I had to send all keys and signed over title. My buddy got lucky since his wife worked with the insurance company via the credit union where she was employed. When his Z was recovered after 5 years, he got a shot at buying it back. If his wife had not had the connections the car would have gone straight to auction and he would have never known.
There was a 55 Chevy that was recovered after 30 years in the Seattle area and the guy got it back since it also had not been insured.

Good Luck on the find. Hopefully you won't be stepping on some one's toes by inquiring. best bet would be a Zoom lens so you can't get trespassing charges leveled against you.

There is still a for sale sign but it is crumbled up and lying on the ground. I called and the realtor said the prop is for sale but wouldn't give any info regarding owner. I looked up the address at the appraisal district and the listed owner is a company but I can't find the company's info yet. Will do more research tomorrow. While we are waiting and waiting, I will hijack this for a moment. There's a real nice collection of cars in the Central Texas Museum of Automotive History, near Austin. If you're ever in that area, it's worth seeing, imo. I go there everytime I visit TX. They have 130+ cars on display...Now back to our regularly scheduled programming...

It is a bizarre story. It got me thinking how many abandoned properties holding true gems might there be throughout the country. Even here on my apartment's parking, there is 68 or 69 plain Camaro. Rusted out like hell with interior totally rotted but it moves as I see it changing parking spaces from time to time.

That's just too damn cool! I hope it works out, I'd go in on the purchase but I'm still saving my loose change and trying to finish off my 67' :noway:. Be careful who you tell around there, someone might swoop in and steal your find right out from underneath you, that would be a b*t#% :(.

drabina
Aug 29th, 08, 09:09 AM
If the owner can be located and contacted, then we could offer him a deal to purchase the cars only. This way he/she gets $$$ for the cars and still can sell the property. Of course we should be able to negotiate good wholesale price for the cars :-) Not being to greedy (as I would like only one car), whatever we do not want/need, can be sold and the profit from the remaining cars could be OP's finders fee. Should work out pretty well.

The thing is, you have to be willing to make an effort if you want others to spend money for you to profit from. It may not be sufficient to get pictures. Investors would want to know exactly wht models are there. You could take a picture of a 6 cylinder '69 Camaro with a cowl hood in the far corner and it might be a COPO. Might will not get the money out. Positive id will.

If you can't make contact with whoever owns the cars/property, it is a waste of anyone's time to start talking about making a deal for the cars. Especially without knowing exactly what is there or if they are even available for purchase.

I would think that others have figured out where the cars are by now.

No offense, but to this point, there is no reason to cut YOU in on the deal so far.

Anyone that owns that many vehicles knows what they have. They didn't accidentally leave 40 cars in storage for no reason. If the owner has passed, I am sure whoever is in charge of the estate also knows what they have.

drabina
Sep 3rd, 08, 09:33 AM
That's why we have to act fast. We still may have a lead if we find the owner and offer him fixed amount and "car disposal". Of course they might be worth more than what we can offer, but selling them individually takes time and not everyone is interested in doing so.

Lots of people have the cash "on hand" There are pople on this site that could drop seven figures without even thinking about it (not me) if the cars were worth it. whats there and are they for sale? post a list of cars that people want, and the cash will FLOW in.

Alright found a little more info out today getting close. A few people on this site has just said give up or someone already has beat you to the cars. The point of me letting everyone know about these cars is to give everyone a chance at getting a great deal. But at the same time i dont want to walk away empty handed.if i was to give up every time i found old cars. like someone said on page 9 then i would not have so many cool stories to tell like the my 67 rs/ss i just picked up I guess i should have gave up on that one 14yrs ago! Anyway i hope some of us can get some cool cars and great stoeies out of this i am doing the best i can. And to some of you that has pmd me i will get back to you as soon as i get all the info hopefully after this weekend. And thanks for everyones help.

For the people on this sight with 7 figure wallets I'll sell everthing I own.:D

I agree this sounds like a nightmare in the making!!
I would start by checking if back taxes are payed,
1 VACANT PROPERTY
2 FOR SALE FOR A WHILE
3 IF TAXES ARE UP TO DATE HE OR SHE PROBABLY HAS PLENTY OF MONEY. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE PROPERY MUCH. IMHO

What do you mean by nightmare? What bad can come out of this. If anything, it's adventurous and that's the fun in finding these old cars. Right? Or am I the only one that looks at it that way?

This deal sounds like a nightmare in the making.

Thats what I'm thinking. I have been following this thread since it began and still am wondering if these cars are for sale or just sitting? I know the property is for sale but that doesn't mean the cars are. As mentioned earlier; the person who owns all these cars must know the value.

I hope it turns out they are for sale but if they are not, there are going to be a lot of dissapointed people.

Skeeter55
Sep 3rd, 08, 07:45 PM
Ive also been following this thread and i don't want any of the cars, but i would love to hear the stories of the hands these cars fall in to... There must be a couple of rare cars to really check out and find some history....Just keep doing your best and if possible take more pictures.

drabina
Sep 3rd, 08, 07:55 PM
I look at it as an adventure too. If it works out, then it would be one hell of a story. If it doesn't than fine with me. It does look like a lot of work but it might be worth it. Once we are able to locate owner and talk to him/her, we will have better understanding of what's going on. Who knows maybe the cars are stolen or maybe the owner is loosing money on the property in taxes/fees and is willing to let the cars go just to clear out the property for easier sale.

I dont mean anything negative towards you and im sure your intentions are good.

What im saying is that it all sounds like a recipe for disaster from all the unknowns to the bickering that would ensue if folks really did start throwing money around as to who gets what and why etc.....

I too having following this post since the beginning. What a great story, what I think everyone means by a nightmare is, with mulitple people throwing in it will be very difficult to say who gets what. Your best bet in my opinion is if the cars are for sale you find 1 or at most 2 investors. With both agreeing what is what and who gets what. By far your best bet is 1 person with the resources to cover the hole nut. Here's to hoping they are for sale and you find the right person with the money.

Kieth, Exactly what Craig is saying. It is not directed towards you, If a few people put up some money, who would get what car, I would prefer the big block camaro or a z28, not a rustang. I just thing there is way to many things that could cuase problems between people. I truely hope it works out for all that get involved. good luck:thumbsup:

Sep 7th, 08, 10:12 AM
Keith, as a Realtor I can say, if you tell her what you really want up front, she will be helpful to a certain extent. Offer her a 'finders' fee IF you are able to acquire the cars. Im talking $500 plus or minus, for her helping you stay on top of the cars. If a bank owns the building and land, they might not own the cars unless they have foreclosed on all the VIN Numbers too. One way to find out, is grab some VIN's and have them checked at DMV or grab some license plate numbers and have them checked to see status. You have to find someone willing to sort out "WHO" owns the cars. Cars are personal property not real estate , so they are treated different. If the bank charged for storage of the cars for 10 years, the bank might own them BUT They have to go thru the legal channel to take them for storage fees. With all those cars, if it were me in your shoes, Id find a good lawyer that knows that area and the bank and get some professional help so it doesnt blow up in your face. The right lawyer might even bankroll your purchase of the cars and then take his finance charge out when you sell them. Just tossing ideas out here.

Well if the cars have any significance/value it may pay to just make an offer on the entire property. If the property is for sale are the cars actually included ???? If so I dont think anyone would mind if you documented EVERY car on the property. All you need a few big hits in the pile and its a worthwhile investment. As far as getting a bunch of guys to all throw in some coin for a bunch of ratty old cars...... Thats got disaster written all over it :clonk:

If she says you can see or photograph the cars, you should try VERY HARD not to: 1) jump and down in glee, 2) laugh out loud, 3) clap your hands and sing Hallejujah!, 4) or say 'OMG.. I thought I was never gonna get to see them!.. *G*

Gary is right, you need a good excuse or maybe you can just come clean with her and let her know that you are after the cars. You mentioned that you will give her something for helping you so she should be OK with that. Just make sure you say that cleaning out the buildings of the cars will make the property more appealing to the next interested buyer.

I think 'cleaning up the property of the cars' is the BEST approach, and it's honest and correct. Anyone interested in the property itself, will find it much more appealing if it is cleaned out so they actually inspect it... the realtor will understand this perspective as well.. and *might* help you approach the seller in the best way..

I worked for law firms for many years and was married to an atty a long time. I would be very careful telling the realtor you were interested in the land when you actually are not. If she has spent time and money showing you the land under false pretenses, there could be legal action. Some may argue anyone who gets involved could be named in a suit if they knew what was going on and form some sort of business group. I'm no lawyer, but these are things that should be considered.

Sorry guys it has taken me so long to post an update. I have been putting in many hours at work and we moved this past weekend and I just now got internet hooked up. I do have a few more pics of the cars that I will post ASAP (as soon as I find the cord in all these boxes!!)

Good news!! I found the owner and I spoke to the guy that is handeling the property and the cars on the owner's behalf. I do not know the story of the owner and the history of the cars but I hope to find out soon. The guy told me there are 150 pre '72 cars in the buildings and he also has another 150 pre '72 cars outside in another location. I last spoke to him yesterday and he is suppossed to call me to set up a time to look at the other 150 cars. He said he was once offered $900,000 for all the cars but the buyer had a heartattack and the deal fell through. He is not trying to sell the cars and prob never will but if he is given an offer he can't refuse he will take it. He did say that he will sell them all or split them up. He stressed that he is not interested in any kind of business ventures such as restoration, etc. or make any deals on the cars. It's either sell the cars or nothing and he really doesn't care either way. I think he has an idea of what the cars are worth but not to the extent to invest any time or energy into them. He is a really grouchy older guy and difficult to talk to. He said nobody else has approached him regarding the cars besides the previous guy. To me $900,000 sounds like a lot but it works out to $3,000 per car which for some of the cars that is very well worth it, for some maybe not so much. But then again, that is what the other guy offered so maybe he will accept less, then again he may want more. The good news is I am dealing directly with the owner's rep and have eliminated the go-betweeners.

Some of the cars in the building are a '69 Firebird convertible, '68 Charger, and a '69 Boss 302 Mustang. There are a total of around nine '67-'69 Camaros and the pics I am going to post there is a row of about nine '70-'73 Camaros still in real good shape and original. I still have not gotten into the first building as the door is screwed shut. That is where the nicest cars are located and they had to screw it shut as people were stealing parts off the cars.

A LOT of people have PM'd me and at this point, yes, I am overwhelmed. I have not had the time to respond to all the e-mails and PMs but I am looking for one or two people to go in with me to purchase all of these cars and sell them and/or possibly restore them. I would really like to start a business with this gold mine as I have a passion for restoring old cars and have been doing it for many years. I need to have the right backer to do what I am wanting to do but I am still entertaining the idea of purchasing 10-20 cars at first and then go from there.

Thanks for the update. Im sure with moving and the long hours your putting in, your time is spread pretty thin. Good luck with whatever route you go with these cars!

Then I guess I'll settle for the '68 charger for $3K, but only if it's a 440+6 car. :D

I know we are all Camaro guys, but what about the other cars? Are you only interested in Camaros? Vettes, Chargers and even Rustangs can be resold with profit if the purchase price is low.

Glad to hear that this story is progressing. I know that this thread sometimes drags but I can understand that this is something off hours for you. I myself have full time job, part time consulting position, 2 year old kid and another one on the way so I know that at the end of the day there is not too much time left for other stuff.

Have a great evening and keep us posted.

Keith, find out how he came to own these cars if you can; how long they been there, etc.. that may give you some insight into what he's looking for. Is he a "car guy" or just a guy who owns cars? It wouldn't hurt to ask. that's a logical question at this point. Some of the basic things still apply. Does he have the titles? .....

I would be interested in any convertibles for the wife. Just about anything else for me thats cool and cheap enough. I do love Camaros, but I love lots of others too. I sent you a PM a few days ago. Brian
